Dog Breeds

What a breed profile actually tells you

A profile covers the traits that tend to hold across a breed: typical size, energy level, coat type, and any health conditions that show up more often in that lineage. It's a reasonable starting expectation, built from what's typically true of the breed, but not a guarantee for any one dog.

Energy level is the detail most owners underestimate

A breed developed for herding or working all day doesn't turn into a couch companion just because it lives in an apartment. Mismatched energy level is behind a large share of the behavior problems that get blamed on training instead.

Are breed profiles accurate for mixed-breed dogs?

Partially. A mixed-breed dog may show traits from more than one parent breed, so a profile is a reference point, not a precise prediction.

Where do breed temperament descriptions come from?

Typically from breed standards published by kennel clubs, combined with what owners and breeders report as typical for that breed.
