Persistent right aortic arch

Also known as: Vascular ring anomaly

Hereditary

A congenital vascular ring anomaly in which an abnormal aortic arch and associated ligament encircle the esophagus, constricting it and trapping food. It is the most common vascular ring defect in dogs, with predisposition in German Shepherds and other breeds. Affected puppies typically regurgitate solid food at weaning.
