Contagious ecthyma (orf)
Also known as: Sore mouth, scabby mouth
Zoonotic
Orf, also called contagious ecthyma or sore mouth, is a highly contagious viral skin disease of sheep and goats caused by a parapoxvirus. It produces proliferative, scabby lesions on the lips, muzzle, gums, and sometimes the udder and feet. Young lambs and kids are most severely affected, and nursing dams may develop teat lesions leading to mastitis. The disease is zoonotic, causing painful localized hand lesions in people handling infected animals.
