Master award for Canine Good Companion dogs

Canine Good Companion™ Master, UPC-CGCM, is not a fourth test. It is an award for a dog that already holds Advanced certification and has also earned at least one verified title from a recognized kennel club, breed registry, or sport or therapy organization outside United Pet Club.

What the Master award actually is

United Pet Club's Canine Good Companion™ Master award, UPC-CGCM, recognizes a dog that combines two things: passing the Advanced tier of the Canine Good Companion program, and holding at least one verified dog training title earned outside United Pet Club. There is no separate Master exam. A dog either qualifies on the strength of an existing title plus Advanced, or it does not yet qualify. Many owners get there with the help of a certified trainer who coaches both the Advanced exercises and the outside discipline the title comes from.

The award recognizes dogs whose owners have already put in real work toward a structured discipline, obedience, agility, or another performance pursuit, and connects that work back to United Pet Club's own manners standard. Advanced confirms the dog behaves well day to day, in an assessment a CGC evaluator conducts in person or on video. The outside title confirms it has also demonstrated skill in a discipline judged by someone else.

What titles count toward Master

A qualifying title comes from a genuine behavior or performance discipline: obedience, rally, agility, herding, scent work, tracking, driving, dressage, eventing, western performance, or a recognized therapy-animal certification. These dog obedience titles all judge how the dog actually behaves and performs, the same thing Canine Good Companion measures, just in a different setting. Trainers who prepare dogs for these disciplines often hold United Pet Club's own credential, covered in full on the trainer certification program page, so they understand both the behavior fundamentals and the specific discipline your dog is working toward.

The title does not have to come from the same organization your dog tested with for Advanced, and it does not have to be a national-level title. A local or regional title from a legitimate sport or registry organization qualifies as well as a national one, as long as it can be verified. Titles earned years ago still count, provided you can still produce documentation, so an older certificate tucked away in a drawer is worth digging out before you assume your dog does not qualify.

What does not count

A conformation title alone does not qualify a dog for Master. Conformation judges physical structure against a breed standard, coat, movement, proportions, not behavior or manners, which is the entire premise the Canine Good Companion program is built on. A dog can be an excellent physical specimen and still lack the skills Advanced tests for.

A dog that holds both a conformation title and a genuine behavior or performance title still qualifies, on the strength of the performance title, not the conformation one. Self-declared or undocumented titles do not count either, no matter how legitimate they may be. Verification is not optional, and there is no shortcut around producing the paperwork.

How verification works

1

Submit the title

Tell United Pet Club which title your dog holds and the organization that issued it.

2

Provide documentation

Submit the certificate, registration record, or other official proof the issuing organization provided when your dog earned the title.

3

United Pet Club verifies it

United Pet Club confirms the title is genuine and came from a recognized organization before the award moves forward.

4

The Master award is issued

Once your dog's Advanced certification and verified title are both confirmed, the Master award and its certificate are issued.

No affiliation with outside organizations

United Pet Club is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or recognized by AKC, CKC, FCI, UKC, or any other kennel club, registry, or sport organization. The Master award is United Pet Club's own recognition that a dog holds a title from one of those outside bodies, verified with documentation. It does not mean United Pet Club administered that title or has any formal relationship with the organization that did.

The accurate way to describe it: an award given to dogs holding titles from recognized kennel clubs, registries, or sport organizations, alongside United Pet Club's own Advanced certification. Nothing about the Master award implies equivalence with, or membership in, another organization's program.

Master award questions

What is the CGC Master award?

The Master award, UPC-CGCM, is United Pet Club's recognition for a dog that holds Advanced certification, UPC-CGCA, plus at least one verified title from a recognized outside kennel club, registry, or sport or therapy organization.

Do I need to pass a test to earn Master?

No. Master is not a tested tier. A dog qualifies by holding Advanced certification and by having at least one verified outside title, documented and confirmed by United Pet Club.

What dog training titles qualify a dog for Master?

Titles from genuine behavior or performance disciplines qualify: obedience, rally, agility, herding, scent work, tracking, driving, dressage, eventing, western performance, and recognized therapy-animal certifications.

Does a conformation title count toward Master?

Not on its own. Conformation titles judge physical structure, not behavior, so a conformation title alone never earns the Master award. A dog with both a conformation title and a qualifying performance title still qualifies on the performance title.

How does United Pet Club verify a title?

You submit the title and the organization that issued it, along with the certificate or registration record proving it. United Pet Club confirms the title is genuine before issuing the Master award.

Can an unverified title still earn the Master award?

No. A self-declared title without documentation does not qualify a dog for United Pet Club's Master award, no matter how legitimate it may be. Verification with official documentation is required every time.

Is United Pet Club affiliated with AKC or another kennel club?

No. United Pet Club is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or recognized by AKC, CKC, FCI, UKC, or any other outside kennel club, registry, or sport organization. The Master award simply recognizes titles those organizations issued.

Does my dog need Advanced certification before Master?

Yes. Advanced, UPC-CGCA, is required before Master, UPC-CGCM. A dog cannot qualify for Master on an outside title alone, without also holding United Pet Club's own Advanced certification.
