About the Modena pigeon
The Modena is a stout, cobby Italian fancy pigeon of medium size, kept for its wide range of colors and its calm, good-natured temperament.
The Modena is a fancy pigeon breed from northern Italy, named for the city of Modena. It is a compact, cobby bird, meaning the body is short and rounded rather than long and slim. The breed is kept mainly for exhibition and as a companion pigeon rather than for racing or meat.
Two broad show types are recognized. The Schietti are self-colored birds in a single shade, while the Gazzi carry a colored head, wings, and tail set against a white body. Across both types the breed comes in a very wide range of colors and patterns, which is one reason it has a steady following among pigeon keepers.
In temperament the Modena is gentle, calm, and docile. It tends to settle well in a loft, tolerates handling, and is often suggested for keepers who are new to fancy pigeons. Adults reach medium size and live roughly 8 to 12 years with good care.

Who it suits
The Modena fits keepers who want an ornamental loft bird with a quiet nature. Its docile temperament makes it easier to handle than flightier breeds, so it works for first-time fancy-pigeon owners and for exhibitors who want a bird that holds still on the show stand. It is less suited to anyone wanting a flying or homing performer, since the breed is bred for shape and color, not flight.
History and origin
The Modena developed in and around the Italian city of Modena, where it was bred for centuries before being standardized and exported to other countries as a show breed.
The breed takes its name from Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Pigeon keeping in the area is old, and local birds were selected over many generations for color and a short, rounded body. The Italian forerunners were sometimes flown in a flock sport in which birds were driven and caught, which encouraged a stout, active type.
Over time breeders shifted their attention from flying performance toward appearance. Selection settled on the cobby build, the upright stance, and the broad set of colors that define the breed today. The two show divisions, Schietti for self-colored birds and Gazzi for the white-bodied colored-marking pattern, became established in this period.
The Modena spread beyond Italy to Germany, where breeders developed a somewhat larger and more refined exhibition type often called the German Modena. From there and from Italy the breed reached Britain and North America, where it became a common entry at pigeon shows.
Today the Modena is one of the more numerous fancy pigeon breeds at exhibitions, kept across Europe and North America. Breeding continues to focus on type, stance, and the large color and pattern range rather than on any working use.
Appearance and breed standard
The Modena is a short, stout pigeon with a rounded chest, an upright carriage, and a broad range of colors across its two main marking types.
The Modena is unmistakably cobby. The body is short and deep, the chest is broad and carried high, and the back is short. The bird stands upright with the tail held clear of the ground and the wings resting on the tail rather than crossed below it. The head is rounded and the beak is medium and stout. The overall outline is compact and rounded, which is the central point of the breed standard.
| Feature | Standard |
|---|---|
| Height | Compact, roughly 18 to 20 cm tall in stance |
| Weight | About 280 to 400 g depending on type |
| Coat | Smooth, tight feathering |
| Colors | Many, including blue, black, silver, red, yellow, dun, and mealy |
| Eyes | Orange to red, set in a fine eye cere |
Coat and colors
The feathering is smooth and lies tight against the body. The Modena is bred in one of the widest color and pattern ranges of any pigeon breed. Schietti birds are a single solid color over the whole body. Gazzi birds are white over most of the body with color confined to the head, the wing shields, and the tail. Within these types the breed appears in bars, checks, and self shades across blues, blacks, silvers, reds, yellows, duns, and mealy tones, among others. Show judging weighs both the shape and stance and the evenness and clarity of the color markings.
Temperament and behavior
The Modena is gentle, calm, and docile, which makes it easy to handle and well suited to a settled loft.
The Modena has a quiet, even temper. It is good-natured and tolerates regular handling, which is part of why it is a popular show bird and a frequent recommendation for new keepers. Birds usually settle quickly in a loft and are not as nervous or flighty as some flying breeds.
With people the breed is generally calm and not prone to panic when picked up, provided handling is gentle and consistent. With other pigeons it is sociable and lives well in a mixed loft, though pairs will defend their own nest box during breeding. The Modena is not aggressive toward keepers and rarely struggles hard when held. As a flock bird it does best with company rather than kept singly.

Care and daily needs
The Modena needs a clean, dry loft, fresh water, room to move, and routine checks of feet and feathers to stay healthy.
Day-to-day care centers on a clean loft, good ventilation without drafts, and steady access to feed, fresh water, and grit. The breed is hardy when kept dry and out of damp.
Grooming
- Provide a shallow bath two or three times a week so birds can keep their feathers clean.
- Check the feet and toes for dirt, scale buildup, and overgrown nails.
- Watch the smooth feathering for parasites and treat the loft if mites or lice appear.
- Keep nest bowls and perches clean to avoid soiled plumage.
Exercise
- Allow daily access to a roomy aviary or loft so birds can move and stretch their wings.
- Give space for short flights and wing flapping even though the breed is not flown competitively.
- Avoid crowding, which raises stress and the risk of disease.
Environment
House the Modena in a dry, well-ventilated loft with secure walls against predators and rodents. Provide individual perches and nest boxes so pairs can claim their own space. Keep the floor litter dry and replace it before it becomes damp or soiled. The breed tolerates a range of climates as long as it is sheltered from wet, cold drafts and from direct heat.
Nutrition and feeding
The Modena does well on a balanced pigeon grain mix with constant access to grit and fresh water, adjusted up during breeding and molt.
The Modena eats a standard pigeon diet of mixed grains and seeds, such as maize, wheat, peas, sorghum, and other legumes. Protein needs rise during breeding and the molt and fall back during rest periods. Constant access to clean water and to hard grit is needed, since pigeons use grit to grind food in the gizzard. A separate source of crushed oyster shell or a mineral mix supplies the calcium that breeding hens draw on for eggshells.
| Life stage | Amount per day | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, resting | About 25 to 30 g of grain mix | 1 to 2 |
| Breeding pair | About 35 to 45 g, higher protein | 2 |
| Molting bird | About 30 to 35 g, higher protein | 2 |
Treats and supplements
Small amounts of greens and safe seeds can be offered as treats but should not replace the main grain mix. A vitamin and mineral supplement in the water or feed is useful during breeding and molt. Probiotics are sometimes added after stress or a course of medication. Keep all supplements within label rates, since over-supplementing can do as much harm as a deficiency.
Health and common conditions
The Modena is a hardy pigeon that lives roughly 8 to 12 years, with most health problems coming from common pigeon parasites and infections that respond to clean housing and routine care.
The Modena is a robust breed and stays healthy under clean, dry, uncrowded conditions. Typical lifespan is about 8 to 12 years. Most illness in the breed is not specific to it but is shared across pigeons, driven by parasites, respiratory germs, and protozoa that spread in damp or crowded lofts.
| Condition | Signs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Canker (trichomoniasis) | Yellow growths in the throat, trouble swallowing | Protozoal, treatable; common in young birds |
| Coccidiosis | Loose droppings, weight loss, low energy | Worse in damp, dirty lofts |
| Respiratory infection | Sneezing, nasal discharge, labored breathing | Improve ventilation and reduce crowding |
| External parasites | Restlessness, feather damage, mites or lice seen | Treat bird and loft together |
| Paramyxovirus | Twisted neck, paralysis, watery droppings | Vaccination is widely used to prevent it |
Preventive care
- Keep the loft dry, clean, and well ventilated to cut parasite and protozoa loads.
- Quarantine new or returning birds before adding them to the flock.
- Follow a regular schedule for worming and parasite control.
- Use pigeon vaccination, such as against paramyxovirus, where it is available and recommended.
- Watch droppings and weight as early indicators of illness.
Training and handling
The Modena is not a flying breed, so training is mostly gentle taming and show-stand conditioning rather than flight or homing work.
Because the Modena is bred for shape and color rather than flight, training centers on calm handling and show preparation rather than racing or homing. The breed's docile nature makes it cooperative, and birds that are handled often from a young age grow used to being lifted, posed, and judged. Patience and routine matter more than any special technique.
Basics
- Handle young birds gently and regularly so they accept being picked up.
- Get them used to a show cage or training coop well before any event.
- Practice posing the bird so it stands upright and holds the breed's stance.
- Pair each handling session with a small food reward to build a positive link.
- Keep sessions short and calm to avoid stressing the bird.
Habitat and housing
The Modena needs a dry, secure, well-ventilated loft with individual perches and nest boxes, protected from damp, drafts, and predators.
The Modena is a loft bird and is housed like other fancy pigeons. The loft should be dry, draft-free but well ventilated, and secure against cats, rats, and birds of prey. Each pair needs its own nest box and perch, and the loft should give enough floor and air space to avoid crowding, which is the main driver of disease. An attached aviary lets birds get air, light, and room to move while staying safe.
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Loft type | Dry, ventilated, predator-proof building |
| Space per pair | Own nest box plus perch; avoid crowding |
| Ventilation | Steady airflow with no direct drafts on birds |
| Litter | Dry floor litter, replaced before it dampens |
| Aviary | Attached flight or aviary for air and exercise |
Setup checklist
- Individual nest boxes and perches for each pair.
- Feeders and waterers kept clean and off the floor.
- A grit and mineral container always available.
- A shallow bath pan offered on a schedule.
- Predator and rodent proofing on doors, vents, and gaps.
- A dry, easily cleaned floor.
Hatching and rearing young
Modena eggs hatch in about 17 to 19 days, with parent pigeons normally incubating and feeding the young, so most keepers let the pair do the work.
Modena pairs usually rear their own young. A hen lays two eggs a couple of days apart, and both parents take turns incubating. The eggs hatch after roughly 17 to 19 days. Newly hatched squabs are fed crop milk, a secretion both parents produce in the first days, before moving on to softened, regurgitated grain. Most keepers leave incubation to the parents, since pigeons are reliable sitters, but an incubator can be used for foster or rescue cases with the right settings.
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 37.5 C (99.5 F) in an incubator |
| Humidity | About 55 to 60 percent, raised near hatch |
| Days | Roughly 17 to 19 days |
| Turning | Several times a day if parents are not sitting |
Hatching steps
- Let the pair settle and allow the hen to lay her clutch of two eggs.
- Leave incubation to the parents where possible, or set an incubator to the values above.
- Keep the nest area calm, clean, and undisturbed during sitting.
- Check that squabs are being fed and have full crops in the first days.
- Provide the parents with extra high-protein feed and calcium while they rear young.
