Good record-keeping is central to the health side of breeding

Tracking pairings, litters and health screening results by hand is manageable for a very small operation, but it stops working the moment the numbers grow. The right software turns scattered notes into records that can flag a genetic risk well before a pairing is finalised.

No single tool suits every breeding programme

Software built for large-scale kennel operations often carries more overhead than a hobby breeder actually needs, while a plain spreadsheet stops being workable once a programme grows past a litter or two. Matching the tool to the actual size of the operation matters more than choosing whichever option has the longest list of features.

Do I need dedicated software for a small breeding programme?

Not necessarily at the outset, but pedigree tracking and health screening records become difficult to manage reliably in a spreadsheet once a programme grows past a litter or two.

What should breeder software track at a minimum?

Pedigrees, health screening results, litter records and buyer contracts, ideally in a format that makes the coefficient of inbreeding easy to check before finalising a pairing.
