United Pet Club

Registration is what makes a tag useful

A QR or code tag can direct a finder to your pet's registry profile, but only once the code has been linked to it. Registering a tag with United Pet Club costs nothing, takes only a few minutes, and ensures the tag continues to work even after you change your phone number or move to a new address.

Why a code tag requires this additional step

An engraved tag begins working as soon as it is fitted to the collar, since a finder simply reads the number stamped into the metal. A QR or code tag operates differently: its code functions only as a pointer, and until that pointer is linked to your pet's profile, scanning it opens nothing of use. Registration is what completes that connection.

Once completed, the tag no longer becomes outdated. If you change residence, update your number, or add a second contact, updating the registry profile is enough, and every scan from that point onward shows the new details. An engraved tag would require re-engraving; a registered tag needs only a brief edit.

If your pet is not yet listed in the registry, it is best to register your pet first, since the tag is linked to that profile during setup. If you are still deciding on a tag, the buying guide compares engraved and QR options in detail.

Four steps to complete the registration

1

Sign in to your free account

New to United Pet Club? Creating an account is free and takes about a minute.

2

Select or add your pet

A tag is linked to a specific pet's profile, so make sure that pet is registered beforehand.

3

Enter the tag's code

Type in the code printed on the tag. This connects the physical tag to the profile.

4

Scan the tag yourself once

Point your phone's camera at the tag and confirm it opens your pet's profile with the correct details. From then on, any scan will do the same.

Frequently asked questions about tag registration

Does an engraved pet tag need to be registered?

Not necessarily. An engraved tag carries its information directly on the metal and functions independently. Registering your pet in the registry is still worthwhile, though, so that a scan by a vet or a check by your local municipal corporation's animal control also leads back to you.

How do I register a QR pet tag?

Sign in to your free United Pet Club account, select your pet, and enter the code printed on the tag. The process takes only a few minutes, and the tag becomes active immediately.

Is registering a pet tag free of charge?

Yes. Linking a tag to your pet's profile costs nothing, and updating that profile remains free for the lifetime of your pet.

What information does a finder see upon scanning the tag?

Your pet's profile, displaying only the contact details you have chosen to share. Depending on your plan, the registry can also notify you the moment the tag is scanned.

Can a tag be reassigned to a different pet?

Yes. The tag's code can be relinked from your account, which is useful when a tag outlasts a collar or is passed on to another pet.
