Grooming guidance
Critical: A Nebelung should not be shaved.
The undercoat keeps heat out as well as in, and the outer coat shields the skin from sun and insect bites. Clipping the whole coat off removes both. It often grows back patchy, soft or a different colour, and in some animals the guard hairs never return properly. Brush the undercoat out instead of cutting it off.
Caution: A Nebelung coat mats easily.
Fine or long hair tangles at the base of the coat, out of sight, where the mats tighten and pull on the skin. Brushing has to reach right down to the roots in sections, not just skim the surface.
Information: A Nebelung drops its undercoat in heavy bursts.
The undercoat comes out in heavy bursts over a few weeks. An undercoat rake, or a bath followed by a proper blow-dry, clears it far faster than daily brushing. Clipping the coat down is not a shortcut for this.

About the Nebelung cat
The Nebelung is a medium-sized blue longhaired cat from the United States, gentle and firmly attached to its own household while staying wary of strangers.
The Nebelung is a medium-sized longhaired cat with a solid blue-grey coat and green eyes. Its name is taken from the German word for fog, a nod to the fine silver-tipped guard hairs that lend the coat a hazy, misted appearance. In its build and its nature the breed sits very close to the Russian Blue, and the coat length is the chief visible difference between the two.
This is a quiet, observant animal. A Nebelung tends to fix its loyalty on one or two members of the family and to shadow them about the house, usually keeping watch from a short distance rather than insisting on constant lap time. Within the family circle it is affectionate and given to gentle play. When guests arrive it will normally withdraw until it has had the chance to weigh up the situation for itself.
Since the breed is sensitive to upheaval, it settles best in a calm and predictable home. Abrupt changes to the daily routine, a noisy household, or a steady stream of unfamiliar faces can leave a Nebelung anxious and retiring.

Who the Nebelung suits
The Nebelung is well matched to people who want a devoted companion and who can provide a steady, low-traffic environment. It rewards owners who allow it to come forward in its own time and who hold daily routines fairly constant. It is a poorer fit for busy households with a constant flow of visitors, for homes with very young children, or for situations where the cat would be left on its own for long stretches, because the breed forms strong attachments and takes badly to isolation.
History and origin of the Nebelung
The Nebelung was developed in the United States during the 1980s from two blue longhaired kittens, with the aim of producing a longhaired counterpart to the Russian Blue.
The Nebelung is a comparatively recent breed that took shape in the United States during the 1980s. Its founding cats were two blue longhaired kittens born to short-haired parents. A breeder by the name of Cora Cobb is credited with launching the programme after she obtained these two kittens, a male and a female, and resolved to establish a longhaired blue cat as a breed in its own right.
The breeding plan leaned on the Russian Blue standard. As the longhaired kittens resembled Russian Blues in both body type and colour, the written standard of that breed served as the point of reference, with the longer coat added on top. This held the Nebelung close to its short-haired relative in conformation while granting it a distinct look.
The International Cat Association granted the Nebelung championship status, and the breed has since gained recognition from further registries. Indian fanciers who keep the breed generally register their cats through these international bodies rather than a dedicated national club. To keep the small gene pool sound, outcrossing to Russian Blues has been allowed in many programmes.
The Nebelung remains an uncommon cat. Its numbers are small, breeders are few, and it is not readily available in most parts of the world, all of which keeps it a fairly rare choice set against longer-established longhaired breeds.
Appearance and breed standard of the Nebelung
The Nebelung is a medium, long-bodied cat with a semi-long blue coat tipped in silver, a neck ruff and plumed tail, and wide-set green eyes.
The Nebelung carries a long, elegant body on fine to medium bone, which gives it a lighter look than its coat might suggest. The head forms a modified wedge set with large, wide-spaced ears and a mild expression. Its signature feature is the soft, semi-long double coat in solid blue, each hair tipped with paler silver so that the cat seems to shimmer as it moves. A ruff about the neck and a full, plumed tail round off the outline.

| Coat | Semi-long, fine, dense double coat with silver-tipped guard hairs |

Coat and colours
The sole accepted colour is solid blue, an even blue-grey across the whole body with no tabby markings, no white patches, and no other shades. The silver tipping on the guard hairs is what produces the breed's characteristic misted sheen. Kittens are at times born carrying faint ghost tabby markings that fade as the coat matures, and the adult coat comes in fully over roughly two years. The fur is fine and stands a little away from the body rather than lying flat, and toms often carry a heavier neck ruff than queens.
Nebelung temperament and personality
The Nebelung is gentle and devoted with its own people, playful in private, and markedly shy and aloof in the company of strangers.
The Nebelung is a gentle, level-tempered cat that forms a close bond with a small handful of people. With its family it is affectionate, quietly playful, and happy to remain close by, often choosing a vantage point from which it can keep an eye on the household. It speaks in a soft voice and is not, as a rule, demanding, though it does seek out the company of its chosen person.
With strangers the breed is reserved and will frequently hide until the visitors have gone or until it has had time to grow at ease. Warming to new people can take a good while. In the company of other pets a Nebelung is usually tolerant provided introductions are made slowly, but it prefers calm companions to boisterous ones. With young children it may shrink from rough handling, so it goes better with gentle, older children.
This is a sensitive cat that sets great store by routine. It tends to dislike change, noise, and disorder, and a stable setting helps it stay confident and sociable within the home.

Nebelung care and grooming
The Nebelung needs twice-weekly brushing for its double coat, moderate daily play, and a calm, stable home in which to stay settled.
Grooming
- Brush the semi-long double coat two to three times a week to keep mats at bay and cut down on loose hair
- Step brushing up to most days during the seasonal moult in spring and autumn
- Check behind the ears, through the ruff, and at the back of the legs, where tangles form first
- Trim the nails every two to three weeks and inspect the ears for wax or debris
- Brush the teeth regularly to hold down dental disease
Exercise
- Give 15 to 20 minutes of interactive play once or twice a day
- Use wand toys and puzzle feeders to occupy the breed's intelligence
- Provide vertical space such as cat trees and shelves for climbing and keeping watch
- Rotate the toys to hold a curious cat's interest
Environment
The Nebelung fares best as an indoor cat within a quiet, predictable home. It sets store by consistent feeding and play times and can grow withdrawn or anxious when routines shift or when the household turns loud. A perch beside a window and a few safe hiding spots help it feel secure, particularly when guests call round.
Nebelung nutrition and feeding
The Nebelung needs a complete, protein-rich cat diet portioned to its body weight, with measured feeding to head off excess gain in this lighter-boned breed.
The Nebelung does well on a complete and balanced diet made for cats, with animal protein as the leading ingredient. As an obligate carnivore it needs enough protein and fat to keep up its muscle and a healthy coat. Working some wet food into the diet supports hydration, which counts towards urinary health. Portion to the individual cat's weight and activity level rather than leaving food out all day, since the breed's fine bone can conceal weight gain beneath its longer coat.
| Life stage | Amount per day | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Kitten (up to 12 months) | Per label, fed to appetite while growing | 3 to 4 |
| Adult (1 to 7 years) | Roughly 50 to 70 g dry, or the wet equivalent | 2 |
| Senior (7 years and older) | Slightly reduced, keep an eye on weight | 2 |
Treats and supplements
Hold treats to no more than about 10 per cent of the day's calories. Fresh water should be on hand at all times, and many cats drink more readily from a wide bowl or a pet fountain. A diet that is already complete and balanced needs no added supplements unless a veterinarian advises them, for instance to support the joints or coat of an older cat.
Nebelung health and lifespan
The Nebelung is generally healthy with a typical lifespan of 13 to 16 years, with care warranted for dental disease, weight, and inherited conditions shared with the Russian Blue.
The Nebelung is reckoned a generally healthy breed and commonly lives 13 to 16 years given good care. It carries no long list of breed-specific defects, owing in part to its limited gene pool and the outcrossing to Russian Blues. The most routine concerns are the very ones that affect most cats: dental disease, weight management, and the inherited conditions that can crop up in any pedigree line. Responsible breeders screen their breeding cats to lower the risk of passing on heritable problems.
| Condition | Signs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dental disease | Bad breath, drooling, eating less | Common in cats; regular dental care helps |
| Obesity | Weight gain, reduced activity | Easily missed under the long coat; portion control matters |
| Urinary tract issues | Straining, frequent or blood-tinged urination | Encourage water intake and watch litter tray habits |
| Inherited heart or kidney conditions | Lethargy, changes in breathing, weight loss | Screened for by responsible breeders; vet checks aid early detection |
Preventive care
- Annual veterinary examinations, moving to twice yearly for senior cats
- Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention up to date
- Regular dental care, brushing included, with a professional clean when advised
- Monitor weight and body condition at home
- Keep the cat indoors to reduce the risk of injury and disease
Nebelung training and enrichment
The Nebelung is intelligent and trainable, responding well to gentle, reward-based methods and games that draw on its problem-solving.
The Nebelung is an intelligent cat that picks things up quickly when training is calm and consistent. It can be taught to use scratching posts, to come when called, to walk on a harness, and to perform simple tricks. Because the breed is sensitive and reserved, it answers far better to patience and rewards than to pressure. Harsh corrections tend only to make it withdraw. Short, regular sessions in a quiet setting work best, and the breed's natural curiosity makes puzzle feeders and interactive toys a fine way to keep its mind busy.
Basics
- Begin in a quiet room clear of distractions and keep sessions to a few minutes
- Reward the behaviour you want at once with a small treat or a word of praise
- Use the same words and cues each time so the cat can learn the pattern
- Redirect unwanted scratching to an approved post rather than punishing it
- Close each session on a success and let the cat rest
Nebelung breeding and kittens
Nebelung queens usually mature around 10 to 12 months, carry litters for about 63 to 67 days, and produce small litters that come slowly into their full coat.
Nebelungs reach sexual maturity at roughly 10 to 12 months, though responsible breeders usually hold off until a cat is mature in both body and behaviour before breeding it. Gestation runs to about 63 to 67 days, and litters are typically small. Because the gene pool is limited, many programmes outcross to Russian Blues to keep the genetics sound, and queens and toms are screened before breeding.
Kittens are at times born with faint ghost tabby markings that clear as they grow, and the full silver-tipped adult coat can take up to two years to come in. Newborns depend entirely on the queen for the first few weeks. Early, gentle handling and exposure to ordinary household sounds count for a good deal with this breed, since sound socialisation helps offset its natural shyness with strangers in later life. Kittens should stay with the mother and litter until about 12 to 14 weeks so that they are fully weaned and well socialised before going to new homes.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Sexual maturity | About 10 to 12 months |
| Gestation | Approximately 63 to 67 days |
| Litter size | Typically small (around 2 to 4 kittens) |
| Coat maturity | Up to 2 years for the full adult coat |
| Recommended rehoming age | 12 to 14 weeks |

Nebelung frequently asked questions
Common questions about the Nebelung's size, temperament, grooming needs, lifespan, suitability, and availability.
How big does a Nebelung get?
The Nebelung is a medium-sized cat, generally weighing about 3 to 5 kg. Its long body and full coat can make it look larger than it is, but the breed is fine to medium boned and lighter than it appears.
What is the Nebelung's temperament like?
It is gentle, devoted, and intelligent, forming close bonds with one or two people. It is reserved and often aloof with strangers, and tends to hide from visitors until it feels at ease.
Is the Nebelung hard to look after?
Care is moderate. The semi-long double coat needs brushing two to three times a week to keep mats away, and the cat needs daily play and a calm, stable home. It is otherwise a fairly low-maintenance companion.
How long does a Nebelung live?
With good care a Nebelung typically lives 13 to 16 years. Regular veterinary checkups, dental care, and weight management all support a long and healthy life.
Is the Nebelung a good family pet?
It suits calm households and goes well with gentle older children and quiet companion pets. It is less comfortable in noisy, busy homes or around very young children, as it is sensitive to upheaval and rough handling.
Are Nebelungs rare and hard to find in India?
Yes. The breed is uncommon, with relatively few breeders and small litters, so availability is limited in most regions and waiting lists are the norm.
What is the difference between a Nebelung and a Russian Blue?
The two breeds share body type, blue coat colour, and green eyes, and they are closely related. The main difference is coat length: the Nebelung has a semi-long coat, while the Russian Blue is short-haired.
