United Pet Club

Get your pet's microchip registered for free

A microchip does nothing until it's registered. United Pet Club connects your pet's chip number to your contact details at no charge, and keeps that record active for as long as you own your pet.

How the microchip registry works

When a vet clinic or shelter takes in a lost pet, the scanner only reads a chip number. It doesn't show your phone number or address. Staff search that number against a database to figure out who to call. If the chip was never registered, or was registered with a service the shelter can't reach, that number leads nowhere.

United Pet Club runs a free, searchable registry that ties your contact details to your pet's microchip number. We accept chips from any manufacturer, so it makes no difference which brand your vet used. Our registry is also networked with the lookup databases Canadian shelters and clinics check first when a stray comes through the door, following the microchip identification standards the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association recommends.

Registration takes a few minutes from start to finish. Begin with free microchip registration if your pet was just chipped, or work through our step by step guides for registering a dog's microchip and registering a cat's microchip. No chip yet? Your pet can still get a free profile through pet registration, and anyone who has found a stray can use the microchip lookup to reach the owner.

Networked microchip lookup

Our registry is networked with the lookup databases shelters and vets across Canada check first, the same ones they turn to when a stray comes in.

A microchip and a pet ID tag work best together

A microchip is a tiny implant, roughly the size of a grain of rice, placed under a pet's skin between the shoulder blades. It holds a unique ID number a scanner can read. It isn't a GPS tracker: there's no battery, nobody can locate your pet in real time, and it only identifies your pet once someone scans it up close. That number is meaningless without a registry behind it, which is why registering matters just as much as the implant itself.

A pet ID tag works differently. It hangs right on the collar, so anyone who finds your pet can read your phone number directly, with no scanner or database needed. Tags do fall off or get pulled off sometimes, though, which is where the microchip backs things up. A registered microchip together with a legible tag covers both the fast, visible option and the permanent one that's harder to lose.

Common questions about microchip registration

Is it really free to register a microchip?

Yes. United Pet Club registers any pet's microchip at no cost, for life, under the free lifetime plan. Upgraded plans add extras like scan location and a 24/7 live agent line, but the free lifetime plan never expires and never costs a thing.

Is there a free pet registry in Canada?

Yes. United Pet Club runs a free pet registry Canadian owners can use for any pet: registration and every contact update cost nothing for the animal's whole life under the free lifetime plan. The registry also participates in the AAHA universal pet microchip lookup, which covers participating registries used by shelters across Canada and the US, so a scan on either side of the border can lead back to you.

Is registering the chip a separate step from implanting it?

Yes, they're two separate steps. Your vet places the chip, but you still have to submit your contact details to a registry before that chip can lead anyone back to you.

What happens when a shelter scans my pet's microchip?

The scanner reads the chip's ID number and shows which registry it's recorded with. Shelter staff then look up that number to find your contact information and reach out.

Do I need to re-register if I move?

You need to update your address (including postal code), phone number, and email as soon as any of them change. A registry only works if the contact information behind it is current, so outdated details can delay a reunion even when the chip itself is properly registered.

Does United Pet Club's registry work outside Canada?

Yes. Pet registration and microchip registration with United Pet Club are available worldwide, and the registry can be searched 24/7 from any country. Every chip we sell meets ISO 11784/11785, so the standard scanners used in most countries can read it, which means a pet registered with us stays identifiable when you travel, move abroad, or rehome across a border.
