About the budgerigar
The budgerigar is a small Australian parrot known for its friendly, playful nature and its talent for mimicking words. In Canada it is commonly called a budgie or parakeet, and it is one of the most widely kept pet birds in the country.
The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), usually shortened to budgie, is a small seed-eating parrot native to Australia. In Canada the bird is also widely known as a parakeet, a name carried over from American usage, and both terms are used interchangeably in pet shops and among keepers. Adults typically measure 18 cm from head to tail and weigh around 30 to 40 grams. The bird is recognised by its long tapering tail, the black bars across the back of the head and wings, and the cere above the beak that changes colour with age and sex.
Budgies are highly social. In the wild they live in flocks that can number in the hundreds, and that flock instinct carries into captivity, where a single bird bonds closely with its keeper and a pair keeps each other company. They are vocal birds that chatter, whistle, and, in many cases, learn to repeat human words and short phrases.
Two broad types exist. The smaller, slimmer wild-type bird is the one seen across Australia and in most pet shops. The larger English or show budgie was developed through selective breeding for exhibition and stands noticeably bigger with a fuller head and longer feathers around the face.

Who the budgerigar suits
A budgie fits households that can offer daily interaction and a steady routine. The bird is small, affordable, and easier to house than a large parrot, which makes it a common first bird in Canadian homes. People who want a quiet pet should know that budgies are talkative for much of the day. A keeper who is away for long hours should keep at least two birds so they are not left isolated.
History and origin
The budgerigar comes from the arid interior of Australia, where it has lived in large nomadic flocks for thousands of years. It reached Europe in the 1840s and became a global cage bird soon after, arriving in Canada through the expanding pet trade of the twentieth century.
The budgerigar is native to the dry grasslands and open scrub of inland Australia, where wild flocks follow seasonal rain and seeding grasses across vast distances. The bird has been part of the continent's fauna for a very long time, and the original wild population remains green and yellow with the barred markings seen on pet birds today.
The English naturalist John Gould described the species and is credited with bringing live birds to Britain around 1840. From there the budgerigar spread quickly through Europe as a cage bird, helped by its small size, low cost, and willingness to breed in captivity. The species arrived in Canada as the pet trade expanded through the twentieth century and has remained popular ever since.
Captive breeding produced colour mutations that do not occur commonly in the wild. Blue birds appeared in the late nineteenth century, followed over the decades by white, grey, violet, and many patterned varieties. Breeders also developed the larger exhibition or English budgie, selected for size and feather quality rather than the proportions of the wild bird.
Today the budgerigar ranks among the most popular pet birds in Canada and worldwide. The importation of psittacines into Canada is regulated under the Health of Animals Act, and birds brought in from outside the country require health certificates processed through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The domestic pet trade relies almost entirely on captive-bred stock, which means most Canadian budgies never touch the import system. Organisations such as the Canadian Aviculture Society support breeders and enthusiasts across the country.
Appearance
The budgerigar is a slim parakeet about 18 cm long with a long tail, barred head and wings, and a colour that ranges from the wild green-and-yellow to a wide spread of bred mutations.
The budgerigar has a compact body, a rounded head, and a long pointed tail that makes up much of its total length. The wings carry fine black scalloped barring, and the back of the head is marked with similar bars. Small dark throat spots and patches of blue-violet cheek feathers sit below the face. The cere, the fleshy area above the beak, is usually blue in adult males and tan to brown in breeding females, which gives a rough guide to sex in the wild-type bird.

Coat and colours
The natural budgie is light green on the body with a yellow face and the dark barring across the wings. Captive breeding has produced a broad palette. The two base colour series are green and blue, and on top of these sit pattern and dilution varieties such as opaline, spangle, pied, lutino, and albino. Young birds show barring that extends down onto the forehead, which clears with the first moult at a few months of age. The iris ring, a pale ring around the pupil, develops as the bird matures and helps distinguish adults from juveniles.
Temperament
Budgerigars are friendly, curious, and highly social birds that bond closely with their keepers and chatter throughout the day. With gentle handling they become tame and confident.
Budgerigars are active and inquisitive. A settled bird explores its cage, plays with toys, and watches what goes on around it. The flock instinct is strong, so a budgie needs to socialise, whether with another bird or with a person who spends time with it each day. A bird kept alone with little attention can become withdrawn or develop habits such as feather plucking.
With family members the budgie is affectionate once it trusts them, often perching on a hand or shoulder and grooming a person's hair or fingers. Toward strangers a budgie is cautious at first and may take time to relax around new faces. Most budgies tolerate other budgies well and do best in pairs or small groups, though new birds should be introduced gradually. Around cats, dogs, and larger parrots the budgie is vulnerable and should never be left unsupervised.
The budgie is one of the more talkative pet birds. Males in particular can learn to mimic words, whistles, and household sounds, and some build vocabularies of dozens of words. The constant soft chatter of a content budgie is normal and is a sign the bird feels secure.

Care and grooming
Budgerigars need a clean cage, daily out-of-cage flight time, fresh water, and regular interaction. Grooming needs are light, but the cage must be cleaned often to keep the bird healthy.
Day-to-day care of a budgie centres on a clean environment, fresh food and water, and time spent with the bird. Budgies keep their own feathers in order through preening, so human grooming is minimal, but the cage and its contents need frequent attention.
Grooming
- Provide a shallow dish of water or a light mist a few times a week so the bird can bathe.
- Check the beak and nails monthly; overgrowth can signal a health or diet problem and may need a vet or experienced keeper to trim.
- Offer a cuttlebone or mineral block, which helps keep the beak worn down and supplies calcium.
- Do not clip flight feathers unless there is a specific safety reason, and have it done by someone experienced.
Exercise
- Allow at least one to two hours of supervised flight outside the cage each day in a bird-safe room.
- Rotate toys such as ladders, bells, swings, and shreddable items to keep the bird busy.
- Close windows, cover mirrors, and turn off ceiling fans before letting the bird out.

Keep the cage out of direct draft and away from the kitchen, where fumes from non-stick cookware can be fatal to birds. A stable room temperature between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius suits a budgie. Canadian winters make outdoor aviaries impractical in most of the country; in Ontario, Quebec, and the Prairie provinces, birds are kept strictly indoors year-round. Even in the milder climate of BC's Lower Mainland, a heated indoor space is standard practice. Position the cage at roughly chest height in a room the family uses, since these are social birds that like to be part of activity. Clean food and water dishes daily and do a full cage clean each week.
Nutrition and feeding
A budgerigar does best on a balanced diet of formulated pellets plus a measured amount of seed, with fresh vegetables and limited fruit. Some common human foods are toxic and must be avoided.
In the wild the budgie eats grass seeds, so an all-seed diet is the traditional choice, but seed alone is high in fat and low in several nutrients. Most avian veterinarians recommend a base of formulated pellets, which provide more complete nutrition, with a smaller portion of seed offered alongside. Add fresh vegetables daily and small amounts of fruit. Always keep clean water available and change it at least once a day.
| Life stage | Amount per day | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Chick (hand-fed) | Formula by weight, per breeder or vet guidance | Every few hours |
| Juvenile | 1.5 to 2 teaspoons pellets/seed plus greens | Free-fed plus fresh food |
| Adult | 1.5 to 2 teaspoons pellets/seed plus greens | Topped up daily |
| Breeding/moulting | Slightly more, with extra calcium and protein | Topped up daily |
Treats and supplements
Millet spray is a favourite treat and a useful training reward, but it is fatty, so offer it in small amounts. Safe fresh foods include leafy greens, carrot, broccoli, and small pieces of apple or berry with the seeds removed. A cuttlebone or mineral block supplies calcium and helps with beak wear. A bird on a complete pelleted diet rarely needs added vitamins; ask an avian vet before using any supplement.
Health and common conditions
Budgerigars typically live 5 to 10 years and stay healthy on a good diet and clean housing, but they are prone to a few specific conditions including fatty tumours, mites, and reproductive problems.
A well-kept budgerigar lives 5 to 10 years, and some reach beyond that with good care. Birds hide illness well, so subtle changes in behaviour, droppings, or appetite are often the first sign of a problem. A budgie sitting fluffed up at the bottom of the cage needs prompt attention. Keeping the diet balanced and the cage clean prevents many of the most common issues.
| Condition | Signs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Lipoma (fatty tumour) | Soft lump, often on the chest | Linked to high-fat seed diets |
| Scaly face mites | Crusty growths around the beak and cere | Treatable; needs a vet diagnosis |
| Egg binding | Straining, swelling, sitting on the cage floor | Affects laying females; an emergency |
| Goitre / iodine deficiency | Wheezing, regurgitation, voice change | Tied to all-seed diets low in iodine |
| Psittacosis | Discharge, lethargy, ruffled feathers | Can spread to people; see a vet |
Preventive care
- Feed a balanced pellet-based diet to reduce the risk of fatty tumours and iodine deficiency.
- Quarantine any new bird for several weeks before introducing it to existing birds.
- Keep the cage and dishes clean to limit bacterial and parasite problems.
- Weigh the bird regularly; steady weight loss is an early warning sign.
- Find an avian or exotics veterinarian before an emergency arises. The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) can help you locate a qualified specialist in your area.
Training
Budgerigars are intelligent and trainable. With patience and small rewards they learn to step up, come when called, and in many cases mimic words and whistles.
Budgerigars are quick learners and respond well to gentle, consistent training. The first goal is trust: a bird that feels safe will accept a hand and take a treat. Once tame, a budgie can learn to step onto a finger, return to the cage on cue, and pick up sounds and words. Males tend to be the stronger talkers, though individual birds vary. Keep sessions short, a few minutes at a time, and end on a success.
Basics
- Give a new bird several quiet days to settle before handling.
- Sit by the cage and talk softly so the bird grows used to your voice.
- Offer millet through the bars, then from your open hand inside the cage.
- Teach the step-up by pressing a finger gently against the lower chest until the bird steps on.
- To encourage talking, repeat a single short word clearly and often, always in the same tone.
Habitat and housing
A budgerigar needs a cage wider than it is tall, with horizontal bars for climbing, varied perches, and daily flight time outside the cage. In Canada these birds live indoors year-round in most regions, and the cage environment must be kept consistently warm.
Budgerigars are strong fliers that move side to side rather than straight up, so a cage with more width than height suits them best. The minimum for a single bird is roughly 45 cm wide, but a pair or an active bird benefits from far more room. Bar spacing should be small enough that the bird cannot push its head through, about 1 to 1.3 cm. Horizontal bars on at least some sides give the bird something to climb. In most of Canada, budgies are housed strictly indoors year-round; the long winters across Ontario, Quebec, the Prairies, and Atlantic Canada make outdoor aviaries impractical without substantial heating infrastructure. Even in the relatively mild BC Lower Mainland, birds are kept indoors as standard practice. Whatever the cage size, daily flight in a safe room is part of keeping a budgie well.
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Minimum cage size (one bird) | About 45 x 45 x 45 cm; larger preferred |
| Bar spacing | 1 to 1.3 cm |
| Perches | Varied diameters, natural wood; avoid sandpaper covers |
| Room temperature | 18 to 26 degrees Celsius, no drafts |
| Out-of-cage time | At least 1 to 2 hours daily, supervised |
Setup checklist
- Wide cage with horizontal climbing bars and a secure door latch.
- Several perches at different heights and diameters to exercise the feet.
- Food and water dishes plus a separate spot for fresh greens.
- Cuttlebone or mineral block fixed to the bars.
- A few toys: a bell, a ladder, and shreddable items, rotated regularly.
- Cage liner or paper on the tray for easy daily cleaning.
Hatching and incubation
Budgerigar eggs hatch after about 18 days of incubation by the hen. Canadian breeders often use supplemental lighting in winter to compensate for the short photoperiod that can suppress breeding activity in northern regions.
Budgerigar hens normally incubate their own eggs and are good parents, so artificial incubation is uncommon and is mainly used when a hen abandons a clutch or cannot sit. A hen lays one egg every other day, usually four to six per clutch, and begins sitting after the first or second egg. She turns and warms the eggs herself, while the male feeds her at the nest. Eggs hatch in the order they were laid, so chicks of different sizes share the box.
Canadian breeders need to account for the country's wide variation in day length. In northern provinces, winter days can be extremely short, and budgies are sensitive to photoperiod: reduced light hours suppress breeding activity and can lead to inconsistent laying. Many Canadian aviculturists maintain 12 to 14 hours of light per day in their bird rooms during autumn and winter using supplemental lighting, which encourages reliable breeding cycles throughout the year.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 37.5 degrees Celsius (artificial incubation) |
| Humidity | Around 50 to 55 percent |
| Days to hatch | About 18 days |
| Turning | Several times a day if hand-incubated; the hen does this naturally |
Hatching steps
- Provide a nest box with a slight hollow in the base and let the hen settle and lay.
- Leave the sitting hen undisturbed; check the box only briefly and quietly.
- Watch for hatching from about day 18 after incubation begins.
- Make sure the hen is feeding the new chicks; a full crop on a chick is a good sign.
- Keep the nest area warm and free of disturbance while the chicks grow their first feathers.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about budgerigars cover their size, temperament, ease of care, lifespan, suitability as pets, and where to find them in Canada.
How big does a budgerigar get?
A standard budgie is about 18 cm from head to tail and weighs 30 to 40 grams. The larger English or show budgie can reach around 24 cm and weigh 50 to 60 grams.
Are budgerigars friendly and good with people?
Yes. Budgies are friendly, curious, and social. With daily handling they tame readily, bond with their keepers, and often perch on a hand or shoulder. They are cautious with strangers at first.
Are budgerigars easy to care for?
They are one of the easier pet birds for a beginner. They need a clean cage, a balanced diet, fresh water, daily flight time, and regular company. The main commitment is daily interaction and frequent cage cleaning.
How long do budgerigars live?
A budgie typically lives 5 to 10 years, and some live longer with a good diet, clean housing, and prompt veterinary care.
Can budgerigars talk?
Many can. Budgies, especially males, mimic words, whistles, and household sounds, and some learn dozens of words. Talking is not guaranteed and depends on the individual bird and on patient, repeated practice.
Should I keep one budgie or two?
Budgies are flock birds and do best with company. If you cannot spend several hours a day with a single bird, keep at least two so they are not left isolated.
Where can I get a budgerigar in Canada?
Budgies are available from pet shops, breeders, and bird rescues across Canada. The Canadian Aviculture Society and provincial bird clubs can help connect prospective owners with reputable breeders. Choose a bright, active bird with clean feathers and clear eyes and nostrils.
