LaPerm: The Curly-Coated and Affectionate Cat

LaPerm

History of the LaPerm

The LaPerm is a naturally occurring curly-coated cat breed that originated in Oregon, USA, in the 1980s. The breed began when a barn cat named Speedy gave birth to a litter, and one kitten was born with an unusual curly coat. This kitten, named Curly, became the foundation of the LaPerm breed.
Unlike other Rex breeds, the LaPerm’s curls are due to a unique genetic mutation, making it one of the most distinct curly-haired cat breeds. The breed was officially recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2002.

Popularity of the LaPerm

The LaPerm is still relatively rare, but it has gained a dedicated following among cat lovers who appreciate its playful nature, affectionate personality, and hypoallergenic qualities.

Why Choose a LaPerm?

For those looking for a loving, low-shedding, and playful cat, the LaPerm is an excellent choice.
•    Unique Curly Coat: A distinctive soft, wavy coat that sets it apart.
•    Hypoallergenic Qualities: Some owners report that LaPerms trigger fewer allergies than other breeds.
•    Loyal and Social: Loves companionship and being close to family members.
•    Low Grooming Needs: Despite their curly coats, they do not mat easily and only require occasional brushing.
•    Great for Multi-Pet Homes: Friendly and adaptable to living with other cats and dogs.

Caring for Your LaPerm

The LaPerm requires gentle grooming, regular playtime, and a balanced diet to stay healthy and happy.
•    Grooming: Light brushing once or twice a week is enough to keep curls soft.
•    Exercise: Needs daily playtime to satisfy its curious and energetic nature.
•    Mental Stimulation: Thrives on interactive games, climbing spaces, and training.
•    Nutrition: A protein-rich diet helps maintain muscle tone and coat health.
•    Companionship: Prefers human interaction and should not be left alone for long periods.

Health Considerations

The LaPerm is generally a healthy breed, but some concerns include:
•    Skin Sensitivity: Due to their unique fur texture, some LaPerms may have slightly sensitive skin.
•    Obesity Prevention: Regular activity is essential to maintain a healthy weight.
•    Ear Cleaning: Their larger ears may require occasional cleaning to prevent wax buildup.
•    Mild Allergies: Some LaPerms may have sensitive stomachs, requiring careful food selection.

Comparisons to Other Breeds

Compared to the Selkirk Rex, which also has a curly coat, the LaPerm has softer and looser curls, whereas the Selkirk Rex’s curls are denser and more structured. Unlike the Cornish Rex, which has shorter, tighter curls, the LaPerm’s coat is longer and fluffier.
Compared to the Devon Rex, the LaPerm is less hyperactive and more affectionate, making it a better lap cat.

Is the LaPerm Right for You?

The LaPerm is perfect for cat lovers who want a rare, affectionate, and low-maintenance curly-coated cat. If you enjoy interactive play, training, and having a loving feline companion, the LaPerm will be a wonderful choice.
However, if you prefer a completely independent or non-social cat, this breed may not be the best fit.
