Scrapie
Notifiable
Scrapie is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats and is the prototype transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (prion disease). It is caused by accumulation of an abnormal misfolded prion protein in the brain, leading to spongiform change. Clinical signs include intense itching, wool loss, behavioural change, tremor, and incoordination over months. Genetic susceptibility is strongly influenced by the prion protein (PRNP) genotype, and the disease is reportable in many countries.
