About the Modena pigeon

The Modena is a stocky Italian fancy pigeon prized in Singapore's small pigeon-fancy circle for its calm nature and wide colour range.

The Modena is a fancy pigeon breed that began in northern Italy, taking its name from the city of Modena. It has a compact, cobby shape, meaning the body sits short and rounded instead of long and lean. Fanciers keep the breed mainly for exhibition and as a companion bird rather than for racing or the pot.

Two broad show types exist. Schietti birds carry a single solid colour over the whole body, while Gazzi birds show a coloured head, wings, and tail against an otherwise white body. Across both types the Modena appears in an unusually wide spread of colours and patterns, which keeps a small but steady following among pigeon keepers.

Temperament wise, the Modena is even tempered, unbothered by handling, and settles into a loft without much fuss. Given Singapore's tight housing rules around keeping birds, most local fanciers who take on the breed do so through an established pigeon club or on landed property with proper approval rather than in an HDB flat. Adults are medium sized and, with attentive care, live around 8 to 12 years.

Who this breed suits

The Modena suits a keeper who wants an ornamental loft bird with an easy going nature. Because it tolerates handling far better than flightier breeds, it works well for someone taking up fancy pigeons for the first time, and for exhibitors who need a bird that stays still on the show table. It is not the right choice for anyone after a flying or homing performer, since the breed is bred for shape and colour rather than for flight.

History and origin

The Modena took shape in and around Modena, Italy, over centuries before spreading abroad as a show breed now kept by a small circle of enthusiasts in Singapore.

The breed is named after Modena, a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Pigeon keeping there goes back a long way, and local birds were bred over many generations for colour and a short, rounded body. Early Italian stock was sometimes flown in a driving sport where birds were chased and caught, a practice that favoured a stout, active type.

Breeders later turned their attention away from flying ability and toward looks. Selection settled on the cobby build, the upright stance, and the broad colour range that mark the breed out today. The two show divisions, Schietti for self coloured birds and Gazzi for the white bodied pattern with coloured markings, took shape during this period.

The Modena travelled from Italy to Germany, where breeders developed a larger, more refined show type often called the German Modena. From Germany and Italy it reached Britain, North America, and eventually pigeon clubs across Asia, including the handful of enthusiasts who keep fancy breeds in Singapore today.

The Modena remains one of the more common fancy pigeon breeds seen at exhibitions worldwide, though in land scarce Singapore it stays a minority interest kept mostly by dedicated club members with the space and approval to house a loft. Breeding still centres on type, stance, and colour range rather than any working use.

Appearance and breed standard

The Modena is a short, stocky pigeon with a rounded chest, an upright stance, and one of the widest colour ranges of any fancy pigeon breed.

The Modena is unmistakably cobby. The body sits short and deep, the chest is broad and held high, and the back is short. The bird carries itself upright with the tail clear of the ground and the wings resting on the tail rather than crossing beneath it. The head is rounded and the beak is medium length and stout. The whole outline reads as compact and rounded, which is the main point judges look for against the breed standard.

Coat and colours

The feathering lies smooth and tight against the body. The Modena is bred across one of the widest colour and pattern ranges of any pigeon breed. Schietti birds show a single solid colour over the whole body. Gazzi birds are white over most of the body, with colour confined to the head, wing shields, and tail. Within these two types the breed turns up in bars, checks, and self shades across blues, blacks, silvers, reds, yellows, duns, and mealy tones, among others. Judges at a show weigh both shape and stance alongside how even and clear the colour markings are.

Temperament and behaviour

The Modena is gentle, calm, and easy to manage, which suits a settled loft and makes it a common pick for pigeon clubs in Singapore.

The Modena carries a quiet, even temper. It is good natured and puts up with regular handling well, part of why it draws new keepers and does well on the show table. Birds usually settle into a loft quickly and lack the nervous streak seen in some flying breeds.

Around people the breed stays calm and rarely panics when picked up, so long as handling stays gentle and consistent. Among other pigeons it gets along fine and lives well in a mixed loft, though a pair will guard its own nest box once breeding starts. The Modena is not aggressive toward its keeper and seldom struggles hard when held. As a flock bird it does best with company rather than kept alone, something worth planning for given how little loft space most Singapore properties can spare.

Care and daily needs

The Modena needs a clean, dry loft, steady water, room to move, and regular checks of feet and feathers, especially in Singapore's constant heat and humidity.

Day to day care comes down to a clean loft, ventilation that avoids direct draughts, and steady access to feed, fresh water, and grit. The breed copes well as long as it stays dry, which takes some doing in Singapore's year round heat and humidity.

Grooming

  • Set out a shallow bath two or three times a week so birds can keep their feathers clean.
  • Check the feet and toes for dirt, scale build up, and overgrown nails.
  • Watch the smooth feathering for parasites and treat the loft if mites or lice turn up.
  • Keep nest bowls and perches clean to stop soiled plumage.

Exercise

  • Give daily access to a roomy aviary or loft so birds can move about and stretch their wings.
  • Allow space for short flights and wing flapping even though the breed is not flown competitively.
  • Avoid crowding, which raises stress and the risk of disease, particularly in a warm, humid climate where germs spread fast.

Environment

House the Modena in a dry, well ventilated loft with walls secure against predators and rodents such as mynahs, crows, and rats, all common around Singapore housing estates. Give pairs their own perches and nest boxes so each can claim its own space. Keep the floor litter dry and swap it out before it turns damp or soiled, a frequent risk given the local humidity. Fanciers on landed property or with an approved loft generally manage this more easily than those trying to keep birds within an HDB flat.

Nutrition and feeding

The Modena does well on a balanced pigeon grain mix with constant grit and fresh water, with extra protein during breeding and moult.

The Modena eats a standard pigeon diet of mixed grains and seeds, such as maize, wheat, peas, sorghum, and other legumes, most of which are easy enough to source from pigeon supply shops. Protein needs climb during breeding and the moult and drop back during rest periods. Birds need constant access to clean water and hard grit, since pigeons use grit to grind food in the gizzard. A separate supply of crushed oyster shell or a mineral mix gives breeding hens the calcium they draw on for eggshells.

General feeding guide
Life stageAmount per dayMeals
Adult, restingAbout 25 to 30 g of grain mix1 to 2
Breeding pairAbout 35 to 45 g, higher protein2
Moulting birdAbout 30 to 35 g, higher protein2

Treats and supplements

Small amounts of greens and safe seeds work as treats but should not replace the main grain mix. A vitamin and mineral supplement in the water or feed helps during breeding and moult. Some keepers add probiotics after stress or a course of medication. Stick to label rates for any supplement, since overdoing it can cause as much harm as a shortfall.

Health and common conditions

The Modena is a hardy pigeon that lives roughly 8 to 12 years, with most problems tracing back to common pigeon parasites and infections that clean housing keeps in check.

The Modena is a robust breed and stays healthy under clean, dry, uncrowded conditions. Typical lifespan runs about 8 to 12 years. Most illness in the breed is not specific to it but is shared across pigeons generally, driven by parasites, respiratory germs, and protozoa that spread fastest in damp or crowded lofts, a real risk given Singapore's humidity.

Conditions seen in pigeons
ConditionSignsNote
Canker (trichomoniasis)Yellow growths in the throat, trouble swallowingProtozoal, treatable; common in young birds
CoccidiosisLoose droppings, weight loss, low energyWorse in damp, dirty lofts
Respiratory infectionSneezing, nasal discharge, laboured breathingImprove ventilation and reduce crowding
External parasitesRestlessness, feather damage, mites or lice seenTreat bird and loft together
ParamyxovirusTwisted neck, paralysis, watery droppingsVaccination is widely used to prevent it

Preventive care

  • Keep the loft dry, clean, and well ventilated to cut down parasite and protozoa loads.
  • Quarantine new or returning birds before adding them to the flock.
  • Keep to a regular schedule for worming and parasite control.
  • Use pigeon vaccination, such as against paramyxovirus, where available and recommended by a vet.
  • Watch droppings and weight as early signs of illness.

Training and handling

The Modena is not a flying breed, so training centres on gentle taming and show table conditioning rather than flight or homing work.

Since the Modena is bred for shape and colour rather than flight, training centres on calm handling and show preparation rather than racing or homing. The breed's easy going nature makes it cooperative, and birds handled often from a young age grow used to being lifted, posed, and judged. Patience and a steady routine count for more than any particular technique.

Basics

  1. Handle young birds gently and often so they get used to being picked up.
  2. Get them accustomed to a show cage or training coop well ahead of any event.
  3. Practise posing the bird so it stands upright and holds the breed's stance.
  4. Pair each handling session with a small food reward to build a positive association.
  5. Keep sessions short and calm so as not to stress the bird.

Habitat and housing

The Modena needs a dry, secure, well ventilated loft with its own perches and nest boxes, kept clear of damp, draughts, and predators.

The Modena is a loft bird and is housed the same way as other fancy pigeons. The loft should be dry, free of direct draughts yet well ventilated, and secure against cats, rats, and birds of prey, all of which turn up readily around Singapore housing estates. Each pair needs its own nest box and perch, and the loft should offer enough floor and air space to avoid crowding, the main driver of disease. An attached aviary lets birds get air, light, and room to move while staying safe.

Space is the real constraint for most keepers here. Fanciers on landed property can usually build a proper loft, while those in HDB flats or condominiums need to check with their town council and the relevant authorities before setting one up, since keeping livestock birds on common property or void decks is generally not allowed.

Hatching and rearing young

Modena eggs hatch in about 17 to 19 days, with the parent pigeons normally handling incubation and feeding, so most keepers simply let the pair get on with it.

Modena pairs usually rear their own young without much help. A hen lays two eggs a couple of days apart, and both parents take turns sitting on them. The eggs hatch after roughly 17 to 19 days. Newly hatched squabs feed on crop milk, a secretion both parents produce in the first few days, before moving on to softened, regurgitated grain. Most keepers leave incubation entirely to the parents, since pigeons sit reliably, though an incubator can help with foster or rescue cases at the right settings.

Incubation conditions
ParameterSetting
TemperatureAbout 37.5 C (99.5 F) in an incubator
HumidityAbout 55 to 60 percent, raised near hatching
DaysRoughly 17 to 19 days
TurningSeveral times a day if the parents are not sitting

Hatching steps

  1. Let the pair settle and allow the hen to lay her clutch of two eggs.
  2. Leave incubation to the parents where possible, or set an incubator to the values above.
  3. Keep the nest area calm, clean, and undisturbed while the pair sits.
  4. Check that squabs are being fed and have full crops in the first few days.
  5. Give the parents extra high protein feed and calcium while they raise the young.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the Modena pigeon cover its size, temperament, care needs, lifespan, suitability for beginners, and where to find one in Singapore.

How big does a Modena pigeon get?

It is a medium sized pigeon with a short, stocky, cobby build. Adults typically weigh about 280 to 400 g and stand upright with a rounded, deep chest.

What is the Modena pigeon's temperament like?

The breed is gentle, calm, good natured, and easy to manage. Birds put up with handling well and settle into a loft quickly, one reason the breed does well at shows.

Is the Modena pigeon hard to keep?

No. It needs the same basics as any pigeon: a clean, dry loft, a grain mix, grit, fresh water, and regular parasite control. Its calm nature makes handling straightforward.

How long does a Modena pigeon live?

With good care a Modena usually lives about 8 to 12 years.

Is the Modena pigeon suitable for beginners?

Yes. Its easy going nature and hardiness make it a common recommendation for people new to fancy pigeons, provided they can arrange a proper loft and put in the daily care, which takes some planning given Singapore's housing rules.

Does the Modena pigeon come in many colours?

Yes. It has one of the widest colour and pattern ranges of any pigeon breed, split between self coloured Schietti birds and white bodied Gazzi birds with a coloured head, wings, and tail.

Where can I get a Modena pigeon in Singapore?

Modenas turn up through fancy pigeon clubs and at pigeon shows, though the breed stays a niche interest locally given how few keepers have the space and approval to run a loft. Overseas breeders and regional shows are another option for enthusiasts here.
