About the Modena pigeon
The Modena is a stout, cobby pigeon from Italy, kept across many lofts for its calm nature and wide range of colours rather than for racing or flying.
The Modena is a fancy pigeon breed that originated in northern Italy, in and around the city of Modena, after which it is named. The body is short and rounded, what fanciers call a cobby build, rather than long and streamlined. Most owners keep the Modena purely for exhibition and as a companion bird in the loft, not for racing or for meat.
Two show types exist. Schietti birds carry a single solid colour over the whole body, while Gazzi birds show a white body with colour confined to the head, wings, and tail. Between the two types the breed comes in an unusually wide spread of colours and patterns, and this variety is a big part of why the Modena has such a loyal following among pigeon fanciers, including a good number in India.
Temperament-wise the Modena is gentle, unhurried, and easy to manage. It settles into a loft quickly, does not mind being handled, and is often the bird recommended to someone taking up fancy pigeons for the first time. A full-grown Modena is medium in size and, with proper care, lives for about 8 to 12 years.

Who this breed suits
The Modena suits a keeper who wants an ornamental loft bird with a settled temperament. Because it is so easy to handle, it works well for someone new to pigeon keeping and for exhibitors who need a bird that will hold its pose steady on the show table. Anyone looking for a flying or homing bird should look elsewhere, since the Modena is bred purely for shape and colour, not for performance in the air.
History and origin
The Modena took shape in and around Modena in northern Italy over many generations before spreading abroad, including to pigeon-fancying circles in India.
The breed carries the name of Modena, a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Pigeon keeping goes back a long way in that area, and local birds were selected across generations for colour and for a short, rounded shape. Early forerunners of the breed were sometimes flown in a driving-and-catching flock sport, a pastime that favoured a stout, active bird.
Over the years breeders moved their attention away from flying ability and towards looks. Selection settled on the cobby body, the upright stance, and the broad colour range that mark the breed out even today. The two show divisions, Schietti for solid-coloured birds and Gazzi for the white-bodied, colour-marked pattern, took shape during this same period.
From Italy the Modena travelled to Germany, where breeders developed a somewhat larger, more refined show type often called the German Modena. From Germany and Italy both, the breed later reached Britain, North America, and in time pigeon clubs in India, where it became a regular entry on the show bench.
The Modena today ranks among the more commonly seen fancy pigeons at exhibitions worldwide, including at bird shows held across Indian cities. Breeding still concentrates on type, stance, and colour range rather than on any working use.
Appearance and breed standard
The Modena has a short, stout body, an upright stance, and a wide colour range split across its two recognised marking types.
There is no mistaking the Modena's cobby shape. The body is short and deep, the chest broad and held high, and the back short. The bird stands upright, tail clear of the ground, with the wings resting neatly on the tail rather than crossing beneath it. The head is rounded and the beak medium and stout. This compact, rounded outline is the single most important point in the breed standard.
| Feature | Standard |
|---|---|
| Height | Compact stance, roughly 18-20 cm tall |
| Weight | About 280-400 g depending on type |
| Coat | Smooth, close feathering |
| Colours | Many, including blue, black, silver, red, yellow, dun, and mealy |
| Eyes | Orange to red, set in a fine eye cere |
Feathering and colours
The feathering lies smooth and close against the body. Few pigeon breeds match the Modena for the sheer range of colours and patterns on offer. Schietti birds are a single solid colour from head to tail. Gazzi birds are mostly white, with colour kept to the head, the wing shields, and the tail. Within these two types, fanciers breed the Modena in bars, checks, and self shades across blue, black, silver, red, yellow, dun, and mealy tones, among others. Judges at a show weigh both the body shape and stance and how clean and even the colour markings are.
Temperament and behaviour
The Modena is gentle, calm, and easy to manage, which is why it suits both a settled loft and a first-time keeper.
The Modena carries a quiet, steady temper. It is good-natured, does not object to regular handling, and this is a large part of why it is such a popular show bird and a common suggestion for someone starting out. Birds generally settle into a new loft within days and are nowhere near as jumpy as some of the flying breeds.
Around people the Modena stays calm and rarely panics on being picked up, so long as handling is gentle and consistent. It gets along with other pigeons and lives happily in a mixed loft, though a breeding pair will guard its own nest box. The Modena does not turn aggressive towards its keeper and seldom struggles hard when held. Being a flock bird, it does best kept in company rather than alone.

Care and daily needs
The Modena needs a clean, dry loft, fresh water at all times, room to move about, and regular checks of feet and feathers, especially through the monsoon.
Daily care comes down to a clean loft, ventilation that avoids direct drafts, and steady access to feed, fresh water, and grit. The breed copes well as long as it is kept dry, which in most parts of India means paying close attention during the monsoon and in humid coastal weather.
Grooming
- Set out a shallow bathing pan two or three times a week so birds can keep their feathers in order.
- Check feet and toes for caked dirt, scaly buildup, and overgrown nails.
- Watch the smooth feathering closely for parasites, and treat the loft at once if mites or lice turn up.
- Keep nest bowls and perches clean so plumage does not get soiled.
Exercise
- Give birds daily access to a roomy aviary or loft so they can move about and stretch their wings.
- Allow room for short flights and wing flapping, even though the breed is not flown competitively.
- Avoid overcrowding, which pushes up stress and the risk of disease, particularly in the sticky heat of summer.
Housing environment
Keep the Modena in a dry, well-ventilated loft with walls secure against predators and rodents, a real concern in many Indian towns and cities. Provide separate perches and nest boxes so each pair can hold its own space. Keep floor litter dry and change it before it turns damp or soiled, which happens fast once the monsoon sets in. The breed adjusts to a range of climates provided it is sheltered from cold, wet drafts and from direct summer heat.
Nutrition and feeding
The Modena thrives on a balanced pigeon grain mix with grit and fresh water always available, topped up with extra protein during breeding and moult.
The Modena eats a standard pigeon diet of mixed grains and seeds, such as maize, wheat, peas, jowar (sorghum), and other legumes, most of which are easy to source from any local feed supplier. Protein needs go up during breeding and the moult and drop back during rest periods. Clean water and hard grit must be available at all times, since pigeons rely on grit to grind food in the gizzard. Crushed oyster shell or a separate mineral mix, offered on the side, supplies the calcium that breeding hens need for eggshells.
| Life stage | Amount per day | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, resting | About 25-30 g of grain mix | 1-2 |
| Breeding pair | About 35-45 g, higher protein | 2 |
| Moulting bird | About 30-35 g, higher protein | 2 |
Treats and supplements
Small amounts of greens and safe seeds work fine as an occasional treat, but should never replace the main grain mix. A vitamin and mineral supplement added to the water or feed helps during breeding and moult. Some keepers add probiotics after a stressful spell or a course of medicine. Stick to the label dose for any supplement, since overdoing it can cause as much trouble as a shortfall.
Health and common conditions
The Modena is a hardy pigeon with a lifespan of about 8 to 12 years, and most of the illness it faces comes from parasites and infections that clean, dry housing keeps in check.
The Modena is a sturdy breed and stays healthy given clean, dry, uncrowded conditions. Typical lifespan runs to about 8 to 12 years. Most illness in the breed is not specific to it but is common across pigeons everywhere, driven by parasites, respiratory germs, and protozoa that spread fastest in damp or crowded lofts, a real risk during the monsoon months.
| Condition | Signs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Canker (trichomoniasis) | Yellow growths in the throat, difficulty swallowing | Protozoal, treatable; common in young birds |
| Coccidiosis | Loose droppings, weight loss, low energy | Worse in damp, dirty lofts |
| Respiratory infection | Sneezing, nasal discharge, laboured breathing | Improve ventilation and cut down crowding |
| External parasites | Restlessness, feather damage, mites or lice visible | Treat the bird and the loft together |
| Paramyxovirus | Twisted neck, paralysis, watery droppings | Vaccination is widely used to prevent it |
Preventive care
- Keep the loft dry, clean, and well ventilated to cut down parasite and protozoa loads.
- Quarantine new or returning birds before letting them join the flock.
- Stick to a regular schedule for worming and parasite control.
- Use pigeon vaccination, such as against paramyxovirus, where it is available and advised.
- Watch droppings and body weight closely as early warning signs of illness.
Training and handling
The Modena is not bred for flying, so training centres on gentle taming and getting the bird used to the show cage rather than on flight or homing work.
Since the Modena is bred for shape and colour rather than flight, training is mostly about calm handling and preparing the bird for the show bench, not about racing or homing. The breed's easy nature makes it cooperative, and birds handled often from a young age grow used to being lifted, posed, and judged. Patience and a steady routine matter far more than any particular technique.
Basics
- Handle young birds gently and often so they get used to being picked up.
- Introduce them to a show cage or training coop well ahead of any event.
- Practise posing the bird so it stands upright and holds the breed's stance.
- Follow each handling session with a small food reward to build a positive association.
- Keep sessions short and calm so the bird does not get stressed.
Habitat and housing
The Modena needs a dry, secure, well-ventilated loft with separate perches and nest boxes, kept safe from damp, drafts, and predators.
The Modena is a loft bird and is housed the same way as other fancy pigeons. The loft should be dry, free of direct drafts yet well ventilated, and secure against cats, rats, and birds of prey, all common visitors around lofts in Indian neighbourhoods. Each pair needs its own nest box and perch, and the loft should offer enough floor and air space to prevent crowding, which is the biggest single driver of disease. An attached aviary lets birds get air, light, and room to move while staying safe.
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Loft type | Dry, ventilated, predator-proof structure |
| Space per pair | Own nest box plus perch; avoid crowding |
| Ventilation | Steady airflow with no direct drafts on the birds |
| Litter | Dry floor litter, changed before it turns damp |
| Aviary | Attached flight or aviary for air and exercise |
Setup checklist
- Separate nest boxes and perches for every pair.
- Feeders and waterers kept clean and off the floor.
- A grit and mineral container available at all times.
- A shallow bath pan offered on a fixed schedule.
- Predator and rodent proofing on doors, vents, and gaps.
- A dry floor that is easy to clean.
Hatching and rearing young
Modena eggs hatch in about 17 to 19 days, and the parent birds normally handle incubation and feeding on their own, so most keepers simply let the pair get on with it.
Modena pairs generally raise their own young without much help. A hen lays two eggs a couple of days apart, and both parents share the incubating in turns. The eggs hatch after roughly 17 to 19 days. Newly hatched squabs are fed crop milk, a secretion both parents produce for the first few days, before moving on to softened, regurgitated grain. Most keepers leave incubation entirely to the parents, since pigeons sit reliably, though an incubator can be used for foster or rescue cases at the right settings.
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 37.5 C (99.5 F) in an incubator |
| Humidity | About 55-60 percent, raised close to hatching |
| Days | Roughly 17-19 days |
| Turning | Several times a day if the parents are not sitting |
Hatching steps
- Let the pair settle in and allow the hen to lay her clutch of two eggs.
- Leave incubation to the parents wherever possible, or else set an incubator to the values above.
- Keep the nest area calm, clean, and undisturbed while the pair is sitting.
- Check that squabs are being fed and have full crops during the first few days.
- Give the parents extra high-protein feed and calcium while they are rearing young.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about the Modena pigeon cover its size, temperament, upkeep, lifespan, suitability for beginners, and where to find one.
How big does a Modena pigeon grow?
It is a medium-sized pigeon with a short, stout, cobby build. Adults usually weigh about 280 to 400 g and stand upright with a rounded, deep chest.
What is the temperament of a Modena pigeon like?
The breed is gentle, calm, good-natured, and easy to manage. Birds take well to handling and settle into a loft within days, which is one reason the breed is such a favourite on the show circuit.

Not really. It needs the same basics as any other pigeon: a clean, dry loft, a grain mix, grit, fresh water, and regular parasite control. Its calm nature makes handling straightforward, even for a first-time keeper.
How long does a Modena pigeon live?
Given proper care, a Modena usually lives about 8 to 12 years.
Is the Modena a good choice for someone new to pigeon keeping?
Yes. Its docile nature and hardiness are exactly why it gets recommended so often to beginners, provided they can offer a proper loft and daily attention.
Does the Modena come in many colours?
Yes, it has one of the widest colour and pattern ranges among pigeon breeds, split between solid-coloured Schietti birds and white-bodied Gazzi birds marked with colour on the head, wings, and tail.
Where can I buy a Modena pigeon?
Modenas turn up through fancy pigeon breeders and at pigeon shows, where the breed is a regular exhibition entry across Europe, North America, and increasingly at bird shows in Indian cities too.
