Good records are what make the health side of breeding work

Keeping track of pairings, litters and health screening results by hand is manageable for a very small program, but it falls apart the moment things grow. Good software turns scattered notes into records that can catch a genetic risk before a pairing even happens.

No single tool fits every program

Software built for large commercial kennels often comes with more overhead than a hobby breeder needs, while a basic spreadsheet stops scaling once a program grows past a litter or two. Matching the tool to the actual size of the operation matters more than grabbing the one with the longest feature list.

Do I need dedicated software for a small breeding program?

Not right away, but pedigree tracking and health screening records get tough to manage reliably in a spreadsheet once a program grows past a litter or two.

What should breeder software track at a minimum?

Pedigrees, health screening results, litter records and buyer contracts, ideally in a format that makes the coefficient of inbreeding quick to check before a pairing.
