モデナについて

モデナはイタリア生まれの中型の愛玩鳩で、がっしりと丸みを帯びた体つきをしています。豊富な色柄と穏やかで人懐こい性格で知られています。

モデナはイタリア北部が原産の愛玩鳩で、都市モデナにちなんで名付けられました。体は短く丸みを帯びたコンパクトな体型で、細長い体つきの品種とは対照的です。レースや食用としてではなく、主に品評会用および伴侶鳩として飼育されています。

品評会では大きく分けて2つのタイプが認められています。スキエッティ(Schietti)は全身が単色の個体で、ガッツィ(Gazzi)は頭部、翼、尾に色が入り、体の他の部分は白いタイプです。どちらのタイプも色柄の幅が非常に広く、これが多くの飼育者に長く支持されている理由のひとつです。

性格は優しく穏やかで従順です。鳩舎にもよくなじみ、扱いにも耐えるため、愛玩鳩を初めて飼う人にもすすめられることが多い品種です。成鳥は中型に育ち、良好な環境で飼育すればおよそ8〜12年生きます。

モデナは、穏やかな性質の観賞用の鳩を求める飼育者に向いています。従順な性格のため飛翔性の高い品種より扱いやすく、愛玩鳩を初めて飼う人や、審査台の上でじっとしていられる鳩を求める出品者にも適しています。この品種は飛翔ではなく体型と色柄のために作られているため、飛行や帰巣を目的とする人には向いていません。

歴史と起源

モデナはイタリアの都市モデナとその周辺で数世紀にわたり改良され、後に標準化されて品評会用の品種として各国に広まりました。

この品種の名は、イタリア北部エミリア・ロマーニャ州のモデナに由来します。この地域での鳩の飼育の歴史は古く、地元の鳩は何世代にもわたって色柄と短く丸みのある体型を基準に選抜されてきました。イタリアの原型となった鳩は、群れを追い立てて捕らえる飛翔競技に使われることもあり、これががっしりとして活発なタイプを生む一因になりました。

やがて育種家の関心は飛翔性能から外見へと移っていきました。選抜が重ねられる中で、がっしりとした体型、直立した姿勢、そして今日この品種を特徴づける豊富な色柄が定まっていきました。単色個体のスキエッティ(Schietti)と、白い体に色柄が入るガッツィ(Gazzi)という2つの品評会区分も、この時期に確立されました。

モデナはイタリアを越えてドイツにも広まり、そこでは育種家によってやや大きく洗練された品評会用のタイプが作られ、ジャーマンモデナと呼ばれることもあります。ドイツとイタリアの両方から、この品種はイギリスや北米にも伝わり、鳩の品評会で定番の出品種となりました。

現在、モデナは品評会でよく見られる愛玩鳩の品種のひとつとなっており、ヨーロッパや北米で広く飼育されています。実用目的ではなく、体型、姿勢、そして豊富な色柄の幅を追求する方向で、今も育種が続けられています。

モデナは胸が丸く盛り上がり、直立した姿勢を持つ、短くがっしりとした鳩です。2つの主要な柄タイプにわたって豊富な色柄が見られます。

モデナはひと目でがっしりとした体型とわかります。体は短く厚みがあり、胸は幅広く高い位置で張り出し、背中は短めです。姿勢は直立し、尾は地面から離れて保たれ、翼は尾の下で交差せずに尾の上に乗るように収まります。頭は丸みを帯び、くちばしは中程度の長さでしっかりとしています。全体としてコンパクトで丸みのある輪郭が、この品種標準の中心となる特徴です。

羽毛はなめらかで、体に密着しています。モデナは、鳩の品種の中でも特に色柄の幅が広いことで知られています。スキエッティ(Schietti)は全身が単色で覆われた個体です。ガッツィ(Gazzi)は体の大部分が白く、頭部、翼、尾にのみ色が入ります。どちらのタイプにも、バー(横帯)やチェック(市松)、単色地など、ブルー、ブラック、シルバー、レッド、イエロー、ダン、ミーリーといった色調が見られます。品評会では体型と姿勢に加えて、色柄の均一さと鮮明さも審査の対象になります。

性格と行動

モデナは優しく穏やかで従順な性格をしており、扱いやすく、落ち着いた鳩舎の暮らしによくなじみます。

モデナは物静かで気性の安定した性格をしています。人懐こく、日常的な扱いにもよく耐えるため、人気の品評会向け品種であり、初心者にもよくすすめられる理由のひとつになっています。たいていは鳩舎にすぐになじみ、一部の飛翔性の高い品種のように神経質だったり落ち着きがなかったりすることは少ない鳩です。

人に対しては穏やかで、優しく一貫した扱いを受けていればつかまれてもパニックになりにくい傾向があります。他の鳩に対しても社交的で、混合鳩舎でもよくなじみますが、繁殖期にはつがいが自分たちの巣箱を守ろうとすることがあります。モデナは飼育者に対して攻撃的になることはなく、抱き上げても激しく暴れることはほとんどありません。群れで暮らす鳥のため、単独飼育よりも仲間と一緒にいる環境に向いています。
