Dog Breeds

What a breed profile actually tells you

A profile sets out the traits that tend to hold across a breed: typical size, energy level, coat type and any health conditions that crop up more in that bloodline. It's a sensible starting point built from what's usually true of the breed, not a promise about any one dog.

Energy level is the detail most owners underestimate

A breed bred to herd sheep across open fields all day doesn't settle into a quiet flat just because that's where it lives now. Mismatched energy is behind a fair few of the behaviour problems that get blamed on poor training instead.

Are breed profiles accurate for crossbreed dogs?

Only partly. A crossbreed dog can take on traits from more than one parent breed, so treat a profile as a reference point rather than a precise forecast.

Where do breed temperament descriptions come from?

Mostly from breed standards published by kennel clubs, along with what owners and breeders report as typical for that breed.
