Good records are the backbone of the health side of breeding

Keeping track of pairings, litters and health screening results by hand does the job for a very small operation, but it stops working the moment things grow. The right software turns scattered notes into records that can catch a genetic risk before a pairing goes ahead.

One size doesn't fit every breeder

Software built for large-scale kennels often comes with more overhead than a hobby breeder needs, while a plain spreadsheet stops coping once a programme grows past a litter or two. Matching the tool to the actual size of the operation matters more than reaching for whichever one has the most features.

Do I need dedicated software for a small breeding programme?

Not straight away, but pedigree tracking and health screening records become hard to manage reliably in a spreadsheet once a programme grows past a litter or two.

What should breeder software track at a minimum?

Pedigrees, health screening results, litter records and buyer contracts, ideally in a format that makes the coefficient of inbreeding easy to check before a pairing.
