United Pet Club

The chip is only half the job. Register it free

An unregistered microchip is just a number under the skin. United Pet Club links your pet's chip number to your contact details at no cost, and keeps that record live for the whole of your pet's life.

How the registry does its work

When a vet surgery, rescue centre, or dog warden scans a lost pet, the scanner shows a chip number, nothing more. Staff then search that number in a database to find out whom to ring. If the chip was never registered, or sits in a database the finder cannot reach, the trail ends there.

United Pet Club keeps a free, searchable registry holding your contact details against your pet's microchip number. Chips from any manufacturer are welcome, so the brand your vet happened to use makes no difference. Our registry also takes part in the American Animal Hospital Association's universal microchip lookup, a cross registry tool checked around the world when a stray comes in.

Registering takes a few minutes. Begin with free microchip registration if your pet was chipped recently, or follow the step by step guides for registering a dog's microchip and registering a cat's microchip. A pet without a chip can still have a free profile through pet registration, and anyone who has found a stray can run a microchip lookup to reach the owner.

Chips and tags cover for each other

A microchip is a small implant, about the size of a grain of rice, sitting under the skin between the shoulder blades and carrying a unique ID number. It is not a tracker: no battery, no live location, and it identifies your pet only when someone scans it up close. The number means nothing without a registry behind it, which is why registering matters every bit as much as implanting.

A pet ID tag works the other way round. It hangs on the collar in plain view, so whoever finds your pet reads your number directly, no scanner or database involved. Tags do fall off or get pulled off, and that is precisely the gap the chip fills. A registered chip plus a legible tag gives your pet the quick visible option and the permanent one together.

Registry questions UK owners ask

Is there a free pet microchip registry in the UK?

Yes. United Pet Club's registry is free for UK pet owners: any pet's chip, from any manufacturer, registers free for life on the free lifetime plan, with unlimited updates and no renewal fee. Upgraded plans add extras such as scan location and a live agent line at any hour, but the basic registration never costs a penny.

Is registering separate from having the chip implanted?

It is. The vet implants the chip, but until you lodge your contact details with a registry, the number leads nowhere. Two different steps, and the second one is yours to do.

What happens when a rescue centre scans my pet's chip?

The scanner shows the chip's ID number and which registry holds it. Staff then search that number, find your contact details, and get in touch directly.

Do I need to re-register after moving house?

No new registration, but do update your address, phone number, and email the moment they change. A registry is only as useful as the details inside it, and stale information can hold up a reunion even when the chip itself is properly registered.

Does United Pet Club's registry work outside the UK?

It does. Pet registration and microchip registration with United Pet Club are available worldwide, and the registry can be searched round the clock from any country. Every chip we sell meets ISO 11784/11785, so the standard scanners used in most countries read it, which keeps a registered pet identifiable when you travel, move abroad, or rehome across a border.
