About the Modena pigeon

A cobby Italian fancy breed kept across Canadian lofts for its calm nature, upright stance, and one of the widest colour ranges in the pigeon world.

The Modena is a fancy pigeon breed that traces back to the city of Modena in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. The body is short and rounded, what fanciers call cobby, rather than long and sleek. Most Canadian keepers raise the Modena for exhibition and companionship, not for racing or utility work.

Two show types cover the breed. Schietti birds are self-coloured, meaning one solid shade runs over the whole bird. Gazzi birds carry a white body with colour held to the head, wing shields, and tail. Across both types the colour and pattern range runs wide, which keeps the breed a fixture at pigeon shows from Ontario to British Columbia.

The Modena's temperament is even, calm, and easy to manage. Birds settle into a loft quickly, tolerate handling well, and are a common first recommendation from Canadian pigeon clubs for anyone new to the fancy. A healthy adult reaches medium size and, with proper care, lives roughly 8 to 12 years.

Who it suits

The Modena suits a keeper who wants an ornamental loft bird with a settled disposition. Because it is docile, it is easier to manage than flightier utility breeds, which is why it works well for first-time fanciers and for exhibitors who need a bird that holds its pose on the show bench. It is not the right choice for anyone after a flying or homing performer, since generations of breeding have focused on shape and colour rather than flight ability.

History and origin

Bred for generations around Modena, Italy, the breed later took root in Germany, Britain, and North America, where it became a staple of the exhibition circuit.

The Modena takes its name from the city of Modena in northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, an area with a long tradition of pigeon keeping. Local fanciers selected their birds over many generations for colour and for a short, rounded body. Early Italian stock was sometimes flown in a driving-and-catching flock sport, a pastime that favoured a stout, active bird.

As the sport declined, breeders redirected their selection toward appearance rather than flying ability. That shift produced the cobby build, the upright stance, and the broad colour palette that define the Modena today. The two show divisions, Schietti for self-coloured birds and Gazzi for the white-bodied, colour-marked pattern, were established during this same period.

German fanciers took up the breed next and developed a larger, more refined exhibition type often called the German Modena. From Germany and Italy the breed made its way to Britain and then across the Atlantic to North America, including Canada, where it found a home at regional and national pigeon shows.

The Modena remains one of the more numerous fancy breeds on the show bench today, with active followings across Europe and North America. Canadian breeders, like their counterparts elsewhere, continue to select for type, stance, and colour rather than for any working role.

Appearance and breed standard

A short, deep-chested pigeon with an upright stance, the Modena is judged on its rounded outline as much as on the clarity of its colour markings.

The Modena's outline is unmistakably cobby. The body is short and deep, the chest broad and carried high, and the back short. Birds stand upright, tail clear of the ground, wings resting on the tail rather than crossing beneath it. The head is rounded and the beak medium and stout. That compact, rounded silhouette is the central requirement of the breed standard, and judges look for it before anything else.

Coat and colours

Feathering lies smooth and tight against the body. Few pigeon breeds match the Modena for colour and pattern range. Schietti birds run a single solid colour over the entire body. Gazzi birds are white through most of the body, with colour held to the head, wing shields, and tail. Within these two types the breed turns up in bars, checks, and self shades across blue, black, silver, red, yellow, dun, and mealy, among other tones. Judges weigh shape and stance alongside how even and clean the colour markings are.

Temperament and behaviour

Even-tempered and docile, the Modena handles well and settles fast, qualities that make it a favourite starter breed in Canadian lofts.

The Modena carries a quiet, steady temper. It is good-natured and tolerates regular handling, part of why it draws so many show keepers and why clubs recommend it to newcomers. Birds typically settle into a loft within days and lack the nervous streak seen in some flying breeds.

Around people the Modena stays calm and rarely panics when lifted, so long as handling is gentle and consistent. It gets along with other pigeons and does fine in a mixed loft, though a mated pair will defend its own nest box once breeding starts. The Modena is not aggressive toward its keeper and seldom struggles hard once held. Like most pigeons, it does better with company than kept on its own.

Care and daily needs

A dry, well-ventilated loft, constant fresh water, and routine feather and foot checks keep a Modena healthy through Canada's changing seasons.

Day-to-day care comes down to a clean loft, ventilation without direct drafts, and steady access to feed, fresh water, and grit. The breed is hardy provided it stays dry, a point worth watching through wet Canadian springs and cold winters alike.

Grooming

  • Set out a shallow bath two or three times a week so birds can keep their feathers clean.
  • Check feet and toes for dirt, scale buildup, and overgrown nails.
  • Watch the smooth feathering for parasites and treat the loft promptly if mites or lice turn up.
  • Keep nest bowls and perches clean to prevent soiled plumage.

Exercise

  • Give birds daily access to a roomy aviary or loft so they can move around and stretch their wings.
  • Allow room for short flights and wing flapping, even though the breed is not flown competitively.
  • Avoid crowding, which raises stress and disease risk.

Environment

House the Modena in a dry, well-ventilated loft with walls secure against predators and rodents, a real concern for raccoons and rats in many Canadian backyards. Give each pair its own perch and nest box. Keep floor litter dry and swap it out before it turns damp or soiled. The breed adapts to a range of climates, including a Canadian winter, as long as it is sheltered from wet, cold drafts and from direct heat.

Nutrition and feeding

A balanced grain mix, constant grit and fresh water, and extra protein during breeding and moult cover most of a Modena's nutritional needs.

The Modena eats a standard pigeon diet of mixed grains and seeds, such as corn, wheat, peas, sorghum, and other legumes. Protein needs climb during breeding and the moult and drop back during rest periods. Birds need constant access to clean water and hard grit, since pigeons use grit to grind food in the gizzard. A separate dish of crushed oyster shell or a mineral mix supplies the calcium that breeding hens draw on to form eggshells.

General feeding guide
Life stageAmount per dayMeals
Adult, restingAbout 25 to 30 g of grain mix1 to 2
Breeding pairAbout 35 to 45 g, higher protein2
Moulting birdAbout 30 to 35 g, higher protein2

Treats and supplements

Small amounts of greens and safe seeds work as occasional treats but should not replace the main grain mix. A vitamin and mineral supplement in the water or feed helps during breeding and moult. Some keepers add probiotics after a stressful stretch or a course of medication. Stick to label rates on any supplement, since over-supplementing can do as much harm as a shortfall.

Health and common conditions

A hardy breed with an 8 to 12 year lifespan, the Modena mainly faces the same parasites and infections that affect pigeons generally, most preventable with clean housing.

The Modena is a robust breed that stays healthy under clean, dry, uncrowded conditions. Typical lifespan runs about 8 to 12 years. Most illness in the breed is not specific to the Modena but shared across pigeons generally, driven by parasites, respiratory infections, and protozoa that spread fastest in damp or crowded lofts.

Conditions seen in pigeons
ConditionSignsNote
Canker (trichomoniasis)Yellow growths in the throat, trouble swallowingProtozoal, treatable; common in young birds
CoccidiosisLoose droppings, weight loss, low energyWorse in damp, dirty lofts
Respiratory infectionSneezing, nasal discharge, laboured breathingImprove ventilation and reduce crowding
External parasitesRestlessness, feather damage, mites or lice seenTreat bird and loft together
ParamyxovirusTwisted neck, paralysis, watery droppingsVaccination is widely used to prevent it

Preventive care

  • Keep the loft dry, clean, and well ventilated to cut down parasite and protozoa loads.
  • Quarantine new or returning birds before adding them to the flock.
  • Stick to a regular schedule for worming and parasite control.
  • Use pigeon vaccination, such as against paramyxovirus, where it is available and recommended.
  • Watch droppings and weight closely as early signs of illness.

Training and handling

Since the Modena is not flown, training focuses on calm taming and show-stand conditioning rather than on flight or homing skills.

Because the Modena is bred for shape and colour rather than flight, training centres on calm handling and show preparation instead of racing or homing work. The breed's docile streak makes it cooperative, and birds handled often from a young age grow comfortable being lifted, posed, and judged. Patience and a steady routine matter far more than any special technique.

Basics

  1. Handle young birds gently and often so they accept being picked up.
  2. Get them used to a show cage or training coop well ahead of any event.
  3. Practise posing the bird so it stands upright and holds the breed's stance.
  4. Pair each handling session with a small food reward to build a positive association.
  5. Keep sessions short and calm so the bird does not become stressed.

Habitat and housing

The Modena needs a dry, secure, well-ventilated loft with individual perches and nest boxes, shielded from damp, drafts, and predators.

The Modena is a loft bird and is housed the way most fancy pigeons are. The loft should be dry, free of direct drafts but well ventilated, and secure against cats, rats, and birds of prey, all common visitors around Canadian properties. Each pair needs its own nest box and perch, and the loft should offer enough floor and air space to avoid crowding, the leading driver of disease in a pigeon flock. An attached aviary lets birds get air, light, and room to move while staying protected.

Hatching and rearing young

Modena eggs hatch in roughly 17 to 19 days, and the parent birds handle incubation and feeding, so most keepers simply let the pair get on with it.

Modena pairs generally raise their own young without much intervention. A hen lays two eggs a couple of days apart, and both parents share incubation duty. The eggs hatch after roughly 17 to 19 days. Newly hatched squabs first feed on crop milk, a secretion both parents produce in the earliest days, before moving on to softened, regurgitated grain. Most keepers leave incubation entirely to the parents, since pigeons sit reliably, though an incubator can serve for foster or rescue cases when set to the right conditions.

Incubation conditions
ParameterSetting
TemperatureAbout 37.5 C (99.5 F) in an incubator
HumidityAbout 55 to 60 percent, raised near hatch
DaysRoughly 17 to 19 days
TurningSeveral times a day if parents are not sitting

Hatching steps

  1. Let the pair settle in and allow the hen to lay her clutch of two eggs.
  2. Leave incubation to the parents wherever possible, or set an incubator to the values above.
  3. Keep the nest area calm, clean, and undisturbed while the pair sits.
  4. Check that squabs are being fed and have full crops in the first days.
  5. Give the parents extra high-protein feed and calcium while they raise young.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions Canadian keepers ask about the Modena cover its size, temperament, care level, lifespan, beginner suitability, and where to find one.
