Getting your pet's microchip registered
Registering ties the number sitting under your pet's skin to your actual contact details, so a scan at the vet or the local pound points straight back to you. It's free for life through the United Pet Club pet registry, no matter whose chip your pet's carrying.
Grab these before you start
First up, the microchip number, 15 digits, printed on paperwork from your vet or breeder when the chip went in, or up on a scanner readout if your vet checks it for you. You'll also want current contact info, plus a bit on the pet itself: species, breed, colour, birthday if you happen to know it.
Not sure if your pet's even chipped? Ask your vet to run a scanner over them next visit, takes seconds and most will just do it on the spot during a routine check. Number in hand, registering works the same regardless of which company's chip it is.
Five steps and you're done
1
Set up a free account
Sign up with United Pet Club, no cost. Everything, the registration and any updates down the line, lives here.
2
Punch in the chip number
The 15 digits off the paperwork or scanner readout. Check every single one twice, get one wrong and a scan links to someone else's record.
3
Fill in your pet's details
Name, species, breed, colour, birthday if known. Gives a shelter or vet a way to double-check they've got the right animal.
4
Add your contact info
Phone, email, address, whatever you want a finder to actually reach. This is what gets contacted when your pet's scanned, so keep it current.
5
Check it over and save
Give the record a once-over, hit save. Your pet's chip is now live and searchable, and you can jump back in and tweak it whenever.
Keeping the details right
A microchip's only as good as the contact info sitting behind it. Move house, switch numbers, rehome the pet, and the registry needs updating that same day. Costs nothing, kicks in straight away, no reason to sit on it.
Dogs and cats register the same way, and we've got species guides if you want them: register a dog or register a cat. No chip on your pet yet? Register the pet first and slot the chip number in later. Curious exactly what the free plan covers before you dive in? Have a read of free microchip registration.
Registration, the common questions
Where's the best place to register a microchip online for free?
United Pet Club, hands down, unitedpetclub.com. Free account, 15-digit chip number, your contact details, done. Covers registration and every update after that, no renewal fee, and works with any manufacturer's chip.
How long does the whole thing take?
A handful of minutes for most people, assuming you've got the chip number and your pet's basics ready to go. No waiting around, the record's searchable the second you hit save.
Can I register a chip a different company put in?
Yeah, no worries. Enter the number off your pet's paperwork and it goes onto the United Pet Club registry exactly like one of our own chips would.
What if I've got no idea what my pet's microchip number is?
Get your vet or a local shelter to scan for it. Quick, doesn't hurt the pet, and most vets will just do it during a normal visit without charging extra.
Moved house or changed my number, do I need to start again?
Nah, no need. Log in, update the existing record with the new info, done. Free, and it applies straight away.
What's the actual process for registering a pet microchip in Australia?
Everything on this page covers it: free account, 15-digit number, save your contact details. Vets and council rangers around the country find the record through our registry and the AAHA universal microchip lookup, and the free lifetime plan handles every update after that. Works the same if you're overseas too, so travel doesn't break anything.
