Dog Breeds

What a breed profile actually tells you

A profile covers the traits that generally hold true across a breed: typical size, energy level, coat type and any health conditions that turn up more often in that line. It's a fair starting expectation based on what's typical for the breed, not a guarantee for any individual dog.

Energy level is the detail most owners underestimate

A kelpie bred to work sheep all day on a station doesn't turn into a lounge companion just because it now lives in a unit. Mismatched energy level is behind plenty of the behaviour problems that get pinned on poor training instead.

Are breed profiles accurate for crossbred dogs?

Only to a point. A crossbred dog can show traits from more than one parent breed, so treat a profile as a general guide rather than an exact prediction.

Where do breed temperament descriptions come from?

Mostly from breed standards set by kennel clubs, combined with what owners and breeders report as typical behaviour for that breed.
