Why low inbreeding isn't always the priority in purebred dog breeding
A look at why purebred dog breeding doesn't always prioritize low inbreeding coefficients, what pulls against it, and how pedigree data and genetic testing can shift that balance.

Coefficient of inbreeding, COI, measures how closely related a dog's parents are by calculating the probability that two copies of the same gene, one from each parent, are identical because they came from a shared ancestor. A litter with a high COI carries a higher chance of inheriting two copies of the same recessive gene, which is one reason lower COI is generally healthier, but purebred breeding has historically prioritized appearance and lineage over that specific number, for reasons that have more to do with how breeds and competitions are structured than with breeders not caring about their dogs.
Why appearance and competition outcomes concentrate bloodlines
Breed standards describe a specific, narrow ideal: size, coat color, ear set, movement. Breeders aiming to match that ideal closely tend to draw from a smaller pool of dogs who already exemplify it, and conformation shows amplify this further through what geneticists call the popular sire effect. A male that wins consistently gets used at stud far more often than an average dog in the breed, and because male dogs can sire many more litters in a lifetime than a female can produce, one popular sire's genes can end up represented across a large share of a breed's next generation. Repeat that pattern over a few generations and the breed's effective gene pool narrows even if no individual breeder set out to inbreed.
Historical lines and the pressure to preserve them
Many purebred lines were established decades ago around a specific working ability, temperament, or look, and some breeders see maintaining that line, including the degree of relatedness within it, as part of preserving what makes the breed distinct in the first place. Introducing an outside dog can mean gaining genetic diversity and potentially losing the traits the line was built around, at least in the generation immediately after the outcross, before selective breeding can recover the qualities the breeder wants while keeping the diversity gained.
That tradeoff is real, not imagined, which is part of why the decision isn't as simple as always outcrossing. A breeder introducing new bloodlines is accepting some unpredictability in exchange for genetic diversity, and not every breeder, or every buyer, is comfortable with that tradeoff in a given generation.
