Le Modène est une race de pigeon de fantaisie originaire du nord de l'Italie, dont le nom vient de la ville de Modène. Son corps est court et arrondi, plutôt que long et fin: on parle d'un type trapu. Cette race est surtout gardée pour l'exposition et comme oiseau de compagnie de pigeonnier, pas pour la course ni pour la viande.
On distingue deux grandes catégories de présentation. Les Schietti sont unicolores, d'une seule teinte uniforme, tandis que les Gazzi présentent une tête, des ailes et une queue colorées sur un corps blanc. À qui convient ce pigeon ?
Le Modène convient aux détenteurs qui recherchent un oiseau de pigeonnier décoratif et au caractère tranquille. Son tempérament docile le rend plus facile à manier que des races plus vives, ce qui en fait un bon choix pour un premier pigeon de fantaisie ou pour les exposants qui veulent un sujet capable de rester immobile sur la table de jugement. Il convient moins à qui cherche un pigeon voyageur ou performant en vol, puisque la sélection porte sur la forme et la couleur, pas sur l'aptitude au vol.
Histoire et origine
Le Modène s'est développé dans la région de Modène, en Italie, où il a été sélectionné pendant des siècles avant d'être standardisé et exporté comme race d'exposition.
La race tire son nom de Modène, ville d'Émilie-Romagne, dans le nord de l'Italie. La colombophilie y est ancienne, et les oiseaux locaux ont été sélectionnés sur de nombreuses générations pour leur couleur et leur corps court et arrondi. Les ancêtres italiens étaient parfois utilisés dans un jeu de vol en groupe où les oiseaux étaient chassés puis récupérés, ce qui a favorisé un type robuste et actif.
Avec le temps, les éleveurs ont déplacé leur attention de la performance en vol vers l'apparence. La sélection s'est fixée sur le corps trapu, le port bien droit et la vaste gamme de couleurs qui caractérisent la race aujourd'hui. Les deux catégories d'exposition, Schietti pour les sujets unicolores et Gazzi pour le motif à corps blanc avec marques colorées, se sont établies durant cette période.
Le Modène s'est répandu au-delà de l'Italie, notamment en Allemagne, où les éleveurs ont développé un type d'exposition un peu plus grand et plus raffiné, souvent appelé Modène allemand. De là et depuis l'Italie, la race a gagné la Grande-Bretagne puis l'Amérique du Nord, où elle est devenue un sujet courant dans les concours de pigeons.
Aujourd'hui, le Modène figure parmi les races de pigeons de fantaisie les plus présentes dans les expositions, tant en Europe qu'en Amérique du Nord. La sélection continue de privilégier le type, le maintien et la richesse des couleurs et des motifs plutôt qu'une quelconque utilité de travail.
Apparence et standard de la race
Le Modène est un pigeon court et trapu, à la poitrine arrondie et au port bien droit, décliné dans une large palette de couleurs selon ses deux types de marquage.
Le Modène est reconnaissable entre tous à sa silhouette trapue. Le corps est court et profond, la poitrine large et portée haut, le dos court. L'oiseau se tient bien droit, la queue dégagée du sol, les ailes reposant sur la queue plutôt que croisées en dessous. La tête est ronde et le bec moyen et robuste. L'ensemble donne un contour compact et arrondi, point central du standard de la race.

Le plumage est lisse et bien plaqué contre le corps. Le Modène se décline dans l'une des palettes de couleurs et de motifs les plus étendues de toutes les races de pigeons. Les sujets Schietti sont d'une seule couleur unie sur tout le corps. Les sujets Gazzi sont blancs sur la majeure partie du corps, la couleur se limitant à la tête, aux boucliers alaires et à la queue. Au sein de ces deux types, la race se présente barrée, écaillée ou unie, dans des teintes de bleu, noir, argenté, rouge, jaune, isabelle et mealy, entre autres.
