A tag only starts working once it's registered
A QR tag points a finder toward your pet's registry profile, but only once the code is linked to it. Registering with United Pet Club is free, takes a couple of minutes, and keeps the tag working even after your number changes or you move to a new town.
Why the extra step matters
An engraved tag works from the moment it's on the collar: the finder just reads the number off the metal. A QR tag is different. Its code is only a pointer, and until that pointer is linked to your pet's profile, a scan opens nothing useful. Registering is what makes that link.
Do it once and the tag stays current for good. Move house, change numbers, add a second contact: update the registry profile and every scan afterwards shows the new details. An engraved tag would need redoing; a registered tag just needs a quick edit.
If your pet isn't on the registry yet, register your pet first, since the tag links to that profile during setup. Still choosing a tag? The buying guide sets out engraved against QR.
Four steps to get it working
1
Sign in to your free account
New here? Setting one up is free and takes about a minute.
2
Choose or add your pet
A tag links to one pet's profile, so make sure that pet is registered first.
3
Enter the tag's code
Type in the code printed on the tag. That ties the physical tag to the profile.
4
Scan it yourself
Point your own phone at the tag and check it opens the right profile. From there, a stranger's scan does the same thing.
Tag registration, answered
Does an engraved tag need registering too?
Not really. It carries its details in the metal and works without any setup. Still worth registering the pet, though, so an SPCA scan or a vet lookup also leads back to you.
How do I register a QR tag?
Sign in to your free account, choose your pet, and enter the code printed on the tag. It takes a couple of minutes, and the tag starts working right away.
Does registering a tag cost anything?
No. Linking the tag is free, and updating the profile behind it stays free for as long as your pet needs it.
What does a finder see when they scan it?
Your pet's profile, showing whichever contact details you've chosen to share. Depending on your plan, you can also get notified the moment it's scanned.
Can I move a tag to a different pet?
Yes. Relink the code from your account, which comes in handy when a tag outlasts a collar or gets passed down.
