Found a pet? Look up its chip for free
United Pet Club's pet recovery lookup is free and open to anyone, anywhere in the world, no account required. Use the Recover a Pet button at the top of any United Pet Club page to search a microchip, tag, tattoo, or passport number. If the pet is registered with us, we help you reach the owner, and our live agent line at 1-800-AID-PETS runs around the clock.
How a microchip lookup works
Every pet microchip carries a unique number, usually fifteen digits, that a vet or animal control officer reads with a scanner. On its own the number tells you nothing about the owner. It has to be matched against a registry, and that is exactly what a lookup does: enter the number, and whichever registry holds the record supplies a way to reach the owner.
The United Pet Club registry accepts chips from any manufacturer and takes part in the AAHA universal pet microchip lookup, usually the first tool vets and SPCA branches check when a stray comes in. If a number is not in our registry, the universal lookup shows which registry does hold it, so the search keeps going rather than stalling.
Reading this as a pet owner rather than a finder? A lookup only helps if your own chip is registered and your details are current. Register your pet's microchip free, or check what the free lifetime plan includes.
Found a lost dog or cat? Do this
1
Check the collar first
A tag with a phone number is the fastest way home. If there is a QR or code tag on it, scan it with your phone camera and the pet's registry profile opens.
2
Get the pet scanned
Any vet or SPCA branch can scan for a microchip, usually free of charge for a found pet. The scan takes seconds and shows the chip number.
3
Run the number through a lookup
Enter the chip number in the United Pet Club pet recovery lookup, or in the AAHA universal lookup if you want to check every participating registry at once.
4
Reach the owner or hand off
If the number matches a registered pet, the registry connects you with the owner. If not, the vet or SPCA branch can take it from there under local stray animal procedures.
What the recovery lookup covers
Microchip numbers
Any brand of ISO microchip, not just chips sold by United Pet Club.
Tag and code lookups
No scanner to hand? The code printed on a United Pet Club QR tag can be typed in by hand instead.
Tattoo and passport numbers
Older identification methods still lead somewhere: the lookup accepts tattoo and pet passport numbers too.
Free, 24/7
No fee and no closing time, and the 1-800-AID-PETS live agent line can help coordinate a reunion at any hour.
Microchip lookup questions
How do I look up a pet's microchip number in South Africa?
Get the pet scanned at any vet or SPCA branch to get the chip number, then enter it in United Pet Club's free pet recovery lookup, available from the Recover a Pet button on every page of unitedpetclub.com. The AAHA universal microchip lookup is another route; it checks participating registries, ours included, in one search.
Does the lookup cost anything?
No. Searching the United Pet Club registry costs nothing, and there is no account required to look up a found pet.
Can I get an owner's home address from a chip number?
No. A lookup does not hand out personal details. It connects you with the registry, which reaches the owner through the contact details on file, so the owner stays in control of what gets shared.
What if the chip number is not registered anywhere?
It happens more often than you would think: the chip went in but was never registered. A vet can sometimes trace the manufacturer from the number's prefix and contact the clinic that ordered it. It is also the best reminder to register your own pet's chip today.
What is the AAHA universal pet microchip lookup?
A free tool from the American Animal Hospital Association that checks a number of registries at once and reports which one holds a record for a chip number. United Pet Club takes part in it, which is one reason vets and SPCA branches find our records quickly.
Make sure a lookup leads back to you
The finder's side of this page only works if the owner's side is sorted. Register your pet's microchip free, and keep your contact details current.
