Egg yolk peritonitis
Egg yolk peritonitis is inflammation of the abdominal cavity caused by yolk material released into the coelom instead of passing down the oviduct. The yolk provokes inflammation and often bacterial infection (commonly E. coli), leading to septic peritonitis. It is a frequent cause of illness and death in high-producing hens.
