Responsible Breeding

A contract protects the animal, not just the sale

A carefully written breeding or sale contract sets out health guarantees, covers what happens if a pup or kitten develops a hereditary condition, and often includes a clause requiring the animal be returned to the breeder rather than left at the SPCA. Most buyers don't appreciate how much that clause matters until they actually need it.

Part of the job is saying no

Turning down a pairing that would sell well but carries real health risk, or declining a buyer who isn't prepared, is unglamorous work. It is, all the same, where responsible breeding is actually practised, not in the marketing.

What should a breeding contract always include?

Health guarantees, a return policy if the buyer can no longer keep the animal, and clear terms covering what happens if a hereditary condition shows up.

How do I know if a breeder is reputable?

A reputable breeder screens for health conditions before breeding, lets you meet the parent animals, and asks you questions too, not just takes a deposit and moves on.
