The tag arrives blank. Registering brings it to life
A QR or code tag points a finder at your pet's registry profile, but only once the code is linked to it. Registering a tag with United Pet Club is free, takes a couple of minutes, and means the tag carries on working even after your phone number changes.
Why a code tag needs registering at all
An engraved tag works the moment it goes on the collar: the finder simply reads the metal. A QR or code tag is different. The code is a pointer, and until that pointer is linked to your pet's profile, a scan opens nothing of use. Registration is the linking step, nothing more.
The reward is a tag that never goes out of date. Move house, change numbers, add a second contact: edit the registry profile once and every scan from then on shows the new details. An engraved tag would be off to the engraver again; a registered code tag needs a two minute edit.
If your pet is not yet on the registry, register your pet first; the tag links to the profile during setup. Still choosing a tag? The buying guide weighs engraved against QR.
Four steps to a working tag
1
Sign in to your free account
New to United Pet Club? The account is free and takes a minute to create.
2
Pick or add your pet
The tag links to one pet's profile, so make sure that pet is registered first.
3
Enter the tag's code
Type in the code printed on the tag. That marries the physical tag to the profile.
4
Test it with your own phone
Point your camera at the tag and check it opens your pet's profile with the right details. A stranger's scan will now do exactly the same.
Tag registration, answered
Does an engraved tag need registering?
No. An engraved tag carries its information in the metal and works alone. Registering your pet in the registry is still worthwhile, so a scan at a rescue centre or a microchip lookup also finds its way back to you.
How do I register a QR pet tag?
Sign in to your free United Pet Club account, choose your pet, and enter the code printed on the tag. The whole job takes a couple of minutes and the tag works immediately.
Does tag registration cost anything?
No. Linking a tag to your pet's profile is free, and editing the profile behind it stays free for the life of your pet.
What does a finder see on scanning the tag?
The pet's profile, showing only the contact details you chose to share. You decide what appears, and depending on your plan the registry can notify you the instant the tag is scanned.
Can a tag be moved to a different pet?
Yes. A tag's code can be relinked from your account, handy when a tag outlasts a collar or passes down to the next pet.
Two minutes now, hours saved later
Register the tag, scan it once yourself, and it is ready for the day you hope never comes.
