Subaortic stenosis
Hereditary
Subaortic stenosis is a congenital narrowing below the aortic valve that obstructs blood leaving the left ventricle, one of the most common congenital heart defects in large-breed dogs. The left ventricle thickens to overcome the obstruction, predisposing the dog to fainting, arrhythmias, and sudden death. Newfoundlands, Boxers, and Golden Retrievers are commonly affected. Severity varies widely.
