Gallbladder mucocele
A gallbladder mucocele is an abnormal accumulation of thick, immobile mucus that distends the gallbladder and can obstruct bile flow. As it enlarges, the gallbladder wall can become necrotic and rupture, causing life-threatening bile peritonitis. It is increasingly recognized in middle-aged to older small-breed dogs and is linked to hormonal and metabolic disorders. Surgery is often required.
