الكلاب لا تعمّم الأوامر تلقائياً. السلوك الذي تم تدريبه في غرفة هادئة يحتاج غالباً إلى إعادة تعليم، بشكل تدريجي أكثر، في بيئة فيها مشتتات.
أغلب المدربين اليوم يفضّلون الأساليب القائمة على المكافأة. العقاب قد يوقف السلوك مؤقتاً، لكنه في نفس الوقت يزيد السبب الأساسي، الخوف أو القلق غالباً، سوءاً.
