Also known as: Зараження лямбліями
Giardiasis is infection of the small intestine with the protozoan Giardia. It is frequently found in chinchillas and can cause intermittent digestive upset, particularly in stressed or young animals.
Infection spreads by ingestion of cysts from contaminated food, water or environment. Overcrowding, poor hygiene and stress increase both carriage and disease.
Many animals show no signs. When present, signs include soft or watery droppings, weight loss, poor coat, reduced appetite and failure to thrive in young animals.
Diagnosis is by finding cysts or trophozoites on faecal examination or by faecal antigen tests, sometimes requiring repeated samples.
Treatment uses appropriate antiprotozoal medication along with rehydration, supportive feeding and thorough environmental cleaning to reduce reinfection.
Maintain clean dry housing, provide fresh water, avoid overcrowding and reduce stress to limit infection and shedding. Practise good hand hygiene given the zoonotic potential.
