Also known as: Diş kökü apsesi, diş hastalığı
Dental disease is common in alpacas and llamas and an important cause of facial swelling, weight loss, and poor condition. It includes tooth root abscesses and cheek tooth overgrowth or malocclusion.
Infection of tooth roots, abnormal tooth wear and alignment, retained or overgrown teeth, and trauma from fighting teeth in males lead to dental problems. Anatomy and feeding type influence wear.
Signs include firm swellings along the jaw, draining tracts, foul breath, dropping or packing food (quidding), reluctance to eat hard feed, drooling, and gradual weight loss.
Oral and facial examination, often sedated, plus radiographs or other imaging of the tooth roots, identify abscesses, malocclusion, and bone involvement.
Treatment may include tooth extraction, drainage and flushing of abscesses, antibiotics, dental floating or correction, and pain relief, ideally by camelid-experienced clinicians.
Regular dental and body-condition checks, appropriate diet and forage, and early attention to facial swelling or eating changes help catch problems early.
