How pet microchip registration works: what actually happens after your pet is chipped

Registering a microchip means linking the unique number embedded under your pet's skin to your name, phone number, and address inside a database that shelters and veterinarians can search when a lost pet is scanned. The chip itself stores only a number, nothing else, so an unregistered or incorrectly registered microchip is close to useless in an emergency: whoever finds your pet can scan the chip, but they'll have no way to reach you. Registration, not implantation, is the step that actually reunites lost pets with their families.
Why the chip itself doesn't store your contact information
A microchip is a passive radio frequency transponder about the size of a grain of rice, implanted just under the skin between the shoulder blades. It has no battery and no GPS. When a scanner passes over it, the chip transmits a stored number, usually 9 to 15 digits, and that's the entire exchange. It cannot tell anyone your name, your phone number, or where you live.
That information only exists if you, or the breeder, shelter, or clinic on your behalf, entered it into a registry database and linked it to that specific chip number. Skipping this step happens more often than pet owners expect. Veterinary clinics and shelters routinely scan a found pet and get a chip number that comes back blank in every database they check: the animal was implanted but never registered. That gap is exactly what registration exists to close, and closing it takes a few minutes with the number in hand.
How universal lookup tools connect scattered registries
There is no single, government run pet microchip database in the United States. Instead there are multiple registries, some run by chip manufacturers, some by nonprofits, some by pet recovery services, and a found pet's chip could be registered with any of them. To solve the problem this creates, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) built a universal lookup tool that checks participating registries at once, so a shelter worker or vet tech can enter one chip number and see which registry actually holds the owner's contact details, rather than guessing based on the manufacturer stamped on the chip.
This is why the choice of registry matters more than the brand of chip. A chip from any manufacturer works the same way at the hardware level; what changes is whether the registry you chose participates in that shared lookup network and whether your information in it is current.
