ไพรีทรินที่สกัดจากดอกเบญจมาศและไพรีทรอยด์สังเคราะห์เป็นยาฆ่าแมลงที่ใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลาย เมื่อได้รับในขนาดที่เป็นพิษ สารเหล่านี้ยืดเวลาการเปิดของช่องโซเดียมในเซลล์ประสาท ทำให้เกิดอาการสั่น น้ำลายไหลมาก และกล้ามเนื้อกระตุก การสัมผัสส่วนใหญ่มีอาการเล็กน้อย แต่แมวมีความไวต่อสารนี้มากกว่า โดยเฉพาะต่อเพอร์เมทริน
