ภาวะไตวายเฉียบพลันคือการทำงานของไตลดลงอย่างรวดเร็วภายในไม่กี่ชั่วโมงถึงไม่กี่วัน ทำให้สารพิษสะสมอย่างรวดเร็วและเกิดความไม่สมดุลของน้ำและเกลือแร่ สาเหตุที่พบบ่อยได้แก่ พิษจากสารป้องกันการแข็งตัว องุ่น และยาบางชนิด การติดเชื้อเช่นเลปโตสไปโรซิส และเลือดไปเลี้ยงไตลดลง ต่างจากโรคไตเรื้อรัง ภาวะนี้อาจกลับคืนได้หากรักษาอย่างรวดเร็วและเข้มข้น แต่มักเป็นอันตรายถึงชีวิต
