โรคปริทันต์คือการอักเสบและติดเชื้อของเนื้อเยื่อที่ยึดฟัน เกิดจากคราบพลัคและหินปูนสะสมทั้งเหนือและใต้ขอบเหงือก เป็นโรคช่องปากที่พบบ่อยที่สุดในสุนัขและแมว ดำเนินโรคจากเหงือกอักเสบที่ยังกลับคืนได้ ไปสู่การสูญเสียกระดูกและเอ็นยึดฟันอย่างถาวร นอกจากความเจ็บปวดในช่องปากและการสูญเสียฟันแล้ว ยังส่งผลต่อสุขภาพโดยรวมได้ การดูแลช่องปากอย่างสม่ำเสมอช่วยป้องกันและควบคุมโรคนี้ได้
