ความผิดปกติแต่กำเนิดที่เพดานปาก (ส่วนบนของช่องปาก) ไม่ปิดสนิทระหว่างการเจริญเติบโต ทำให้เกิดช่องเปิดระหว่างช่องปากและโพรงจมูก อาจเป็นทางพันธุกรรม โดยเฉพาะพบความเสี่ยงตามสายพันธุ์ในสุนัขพันธุ์หน้าสั้น หรือเกิดจากสารก่อวิรูปในระหว่างตั้งท้อง ลูกสุนัขที่ป่วยดูดนมลำบากและเสี่ยงต่อปอดอักเสบจากการสำลัก
