Modenaduvan är en satt, kraftigt byggd italiensk rasduva av medelstorlek, uppskattad för sitt stora färgregister och sitt lugna, godmodiga temperament.

Modenaduvan är en rasduva från norra Italien, uppkallad efter staden Modena. Den är kompakt och satt till byggnaden, vilket innebär att kroppen är kort och rundad snarare än lång och smal. Rasen hålls i första hand för utställning och som sällskapsduva, inte för kapplöpning eller köttproduktion.

Två huvudtyper förekommer på utställning. Schietti är enfärgade fåglar i en enda nyans, medan Gazzi har färgat huvud, färgade vingar och en färgad stjärt mot en i övrigt vit kropp. Inom båda typerna förekommer rasen i ett mycket brett register av färger och teckningar, vilket är en av anledningarna till att den fortfarande lockar många duvuppfödare.

Vem Modenaduvan passar för

Modenaduvan passar den som vill ha en prydnadsduva med lugnt temperament i duvslaget. Den fogliga naturen gör den enklare att hantera än piggare och mer flygvilliga raser, och därför fungerar den bra för förstagångsuppfödare och för utställare som vill ha en fågel som håller sig stilla på bedömningsbordet. Den passar sämre för den som vill ha en flygduva eller brevduva, eftersom rasen är avlad för form och färg snarare än flygförmåga.

Historia och ursprung

Modenaduvan utvecklades i och kring den italienska staden Modena, där den avlades i århundraden innan den standardiserades och exporterades som utställningsras.

Rasen har fått sitt namn efter Modena i regionen Emilia-Romagna i norra Italien. Duvhållning har lång tradition i trakten, och lokala fåglar avlades under många generationer för färg och en kort, rundad kropp. De italienska föregångarna flögs ibland i en flocksport där fåglarna drevs och fångades, vilket gynnade en satt och pigg typ.

Med tiden flyttade uppfödarna fokus från flygförmåga till utseende. Aveln inriktades på den satta kroppsbyggnaden, den upprätta hållningen och det breda färgregister som fortfarande kännetecknar rasen. De två utställningsgrupperna, Schietti för enfärgade fåglar och Gazzi för den vitkroppade teckningen med färgade partier, etablerades under denna period.

Modenaduvan spreds från Italien till Tyskland, där uppfödare tog fram en något större och mer förfinad utställningstyp som ofta kallas tysk Modena. Därifrån och från Italien nådde rasen Storbritannien och Nordamerika, där den blev en vanlig anmälan på duvutställningar.

I dag är Modenaduvan en av de mer talrika rasduvorna på utställningar och hålls över hela Europa och Nordamerika. Aveln fokuserar fortfarande på typ, hållning och det stora färg- och teckningsregistret snarare än på någon bruksegenskap.

Utseende och rasstandard

Modenaduvan är en kort, satt duva med rund bröstkorg, upprätt hållning och ett brett färgregister fördelat på rasens två huvudtyper.

Modenaduvan är omisskännligt satt i kroppsbyggnaden. Kroppen är kort och djup, bröstet är brett och buret högt, och ryggen är kort. Fågeln står upprätt med stjärten hållen fri från marken, och vingarna vilar ovanpå stjärten i stället för att korsas under den. Huvudet är runt och näbben medelstor och kraftig. Helhetsintrycket ska vara kompakt och runt, vilket är den centrala punkten i rasstandarden.

Fjädrarna är släta och ligger tätt mot kroppen. Modenaduvan avlas i ett av de bredaste färg- och teckningsregistren bland alla duvraser. Schietti-fåglar är enfärgade över hela kroppen. Gazzi-fåglar är vita på större delen av kroppen, med färg begränsad till huvud, vingsköldar och stjärt. Inom dessa typer förekommer rasen i bland annat bandteckning, rutteckning och enfärgade nyanser i blått, svart, silver, rött, gult, dun och mjölfärgat. Vid bedömning vägs både form och hållning samt hur jämn och tydlig färgteckningen är.

Temperament och beteende

Modenaduvan är mild, lugn och foglig. Det gör rasen lätt att hantera och väl lämpad för ett stillsamt duvslag.

Modenaduvan har ett lugnt och jämnt temperament. Den är godmodig och tål regelbunden hantering väl, vilket bidrar till att den är en populär utställningsfågel och ofta rekommenderas till nya uppfödare. Fåglarna brukar slå sig till ro snabbt i duvslaget och är inte lika nervösa eller skygga som en del flygraser.

Mot människor är rasen överlag lugn och blir sällan panikslagen när den lyfts upp, förutsatt att hanteringen är mjuk och konsekvent. Mot andra duvor är den social och trivs bra i ett blandat duvslag, även om par försvarar sin egen redlåda under häckningen.
