Elevated liver enzymes are a bloodwork finding, not something you would notice by watching your pet, and mean that liver cells or the ducts around them are under some kind of strain. The degree and pattern of the increase, and whether other blood values are also abnormal, matter more than the finding alone in deciding how serious it is. Any elevation should be discussed with the vet who ran the test rather than looked up and interpreted alone.

Elevated liver enzymes are a laboratory finding rather than something an owner would see or feel at home; they show up only on a blood panel, usually run for a routine check, before anesthesia, or while investigating another sign entirely. The main enzymes measured, ALT, AST, ALP, and GGT, come from liver cells or the cells lining the bile ducts, and their levels rise when those cells are irritated, damaged, or working harder than usual. A mild, isolated rise in one enzyme means something quite different from a marked increase across several, which is why the vet interprets the whole panel rather than a single number.
Liver enzymes can climb because of direct liver disease, but also because of conditions elsewhere in the body, including certain hormonal disorders, some medications, and normal age-related change in dogs. Toxin exposure, infections, and blocked bile flow raise these values too, and in cats even a short spell of poor appetite can push liver enzymes up as fat is mobilized faster than the liver can process it. A single mildly elevated enzyme on a routine screen in an otherwise healthy, normal-eating pet is often less concerning than the same finding alongside other abnormal values or clinical signs.
Elevated liver enzymes alongside jaundice, vomiting, lethargy, or a sudden drop in appetite point toward active liver disease that needs prompt attention rather than a routine recheck. Very high values, especially alongside abnormal clotting results or low blood sugar, suggest the liver's function is significantly compromised and warrant same-day follow-up. A mild, isolated elevation found incidentally in a pet that feels completely normal is far less urgent and usually gets a recheck rather than immediate intervention.
The vet reviews the full blood panel alongside the animal's history, medications, and physical exam findings to judge how significant the result is. Depending on the pattern, next steps might include repeating the bloodwork in a few weeks, checking additional liver function tests, or moving to abdominal ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. Mild, incidental elevations in an otherwise healthy pet are often simply monitored over time rather than investigated aggressively straight away.
There is no home treatment for an abnormal blood result, and adjusting diet or supplements without veterinary guidance can do more harm than good. Avoid giving human medications or unregulated liver-support supplements without checking with a vet first, since some can worsen liver stress. Keeping up with routine bloodwork, particularly in older pets or those on long-term medication, is the best way to catch a rising trend early and act on it before it grows into a bigger problem.
