Rostrale schaafwond is een chronisch letsel van snuit en neus door herhaald schuren of duwen tegen terrariumwanden, glas of gaas. Het is meestal een gedragsreactie op stress, slecht terrariumontwerp, een ontsnappingspoging, of een poging om partners of voedsel voorbij een barrière te bereiken. Aanhoudend schuren slijt huid en schubben af, waardoor rauw weefsel of bot wordt blootgesteld dat gemakkelijk geïnfecteerd raakt. Het is een veelvoorkomend, managementgerelateerd probleem bij landschildpadden en actieve hagedissen en slangen.
Rostral abrasion is wear and injury to the nose and snout caused by an animal repeatedly rubbing or pushing against the boundaries of its enclosure. It reflects an underlying behavioral or housing problem rather than a primary disease and is common in tortoises and active lizards and snakes.
Common triggers include enclosures that are too small or barren, transparent walls the animal repeatedly tries to walk through, persistent escape attempts, boredom, and stress from being unable to reach mates, food, or a basking site beyond a barrier.
Signs are reddened, raw, or scabbed areas on the snout and upper lip, loss of scales, swelling, and, in chronic cases, exposed bone, deformity, and secondary bacterial infection. The animal is often observed pacing and rubbing its nose against the enclosure boundary.
Diagnosis is based on the characteristic snout lesions together with observation of the rubbing behavior and a review of the enclosure design, size, and overall husbandry.
Treatment involves cleaning the wounds, applying topical and sometimes systemic antibiotics for infection, providing pain relief, and, most importantly, modifying the enclosure to stop the behavior. Adding visual barriers, opaque walls, more space, and enrichment addresses the root cause.
Prevent rostral abrasion with appropriately sized, enriched enclosures, opaque or visually broken-up walls, correct temperatures and hides, and measures to reduce stress.
