Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most frequently diagnosed feline heart disease. The left ventricular muscle becomes abnormally thick, stiffening the heart and reducing its ability to fill normally.
Many cases are inherited. Specific mutations in the MYBPC3 gene are documented in Maine Coon and Ragdoll cats, and a heritable basis is suspected in other breeds. Secondary thickening from hyperthyroidism or hypertension must be excluded.
Many cats show no signs for years. Others develop rapid or labored breathing from heart failure, sudden hind-limb paralysis from an aortic thromboembolism, collapse or sudden death.
Echocardiography is the definitive test, measuring wall thickness and function. Cardiac biomarkers (NT-proBNP), radiographs and blood pressure help, and breed-specific DNA tests identify some carriers.
There is no cure. Therapy targets heart failure with diuretics, anti-clotting drugs to prevent thromboembolism, and medications to support cardiac function and rhythm.
Genetic testing and echocardiographic screening of breeding cats reduce transmission in affected lines.
