Over de Modena-duif

De Modena is een gedrongen Italiaanse sierduif van middelgrote afmetingen, gehouden om zijn brede kleurenpalet en zijn rustige, goedaardige karakter.

De Modena is een sierduivenras uit Noord-Italië, genoemd naar de stad Modena. Het is een compacte, gedrongen duif: het lichaam is kort en rond in plaats van lang en slank. Het ras wordt vooral gehouden voor tentoonstelling en als gezelschapsduif, niet om te vliegen of voor het vlees.

Er worden twee hoofdtypen onderscheiden. De Schietti zijn eenkleurige vogels in een egale tint, terwijl de Gazzi een gekleurde kop, vleugels en staart hebben tegen een witte romp. Binnen beide typen komt het ras voor in een zeer breed scala aan kleuren en tekeningen, en dat is een van de redenen waarom het ras onder duivenliefhebbers een vaste aanhang heeft behouden.

Qua karakter is de Modena zacht, kalm en volgzaam. De duif went doorgaans snel aan het hok en verdraagt hanteren goed, waardoor het ras vaak wordt aangeraden aan wie voor het eerst met sierduiven begint. Volwassen dieren zijn middelgroot en worden bij goede verzorging ongeveer 8 tot 12 jaar oud.

Voor wie geschikt

De Modena past bij houders die een sierduif met een rustig karakter in het hok willen. Het volgzame temperament maakt de duif makkelijker te hanteren dan onrustiger vliegrassen, waardoor het ras geschikt is voor beginnende sierduivenhouders en voor exposanten die een vogel willen die stilstaat op de showtafel. Voor wie een vlieg- of postduif zoekt, is de Modena minder geschikt, want het ras is gefokt op vorm en kleur, niet op vliegprestaties.

Geschiedenis en herkomst

De Modena ontstond in en rond de Italiaanse stad Modena, waar het ras eeuwenlang werd gefokt voordat het werd gestandaardiseerd en als showduif geëxporteerd.

Het ras dankt zijn naam aan Modena, in de regio Emilia-Romagna in Noord-Italië. Duiven houden heeft in die streek een lange geschiedenis, en plaatselijke vogels werden generatie op generatie geselecteerd op kleur en een kort, rond lichaam. De Italiaanse voorlopers van het ras werden soms ingezet bij een vliegspel waarbij groepen duiven werden opgejaagd en weer gevangen, wat een stevig, actief type in de hand werkte.

Naarmate de tijd verstreek, verlegden fokkers hun aandacht van vliegprestaties naar uiterlijk. De selectie richtte zich op de gedrongen bouw, de rechte houding en het brede kleurenpalet die het ras vandaag de dag kenmerken. In deze periode raakten ook de twee showindelingen gevestigd: Schietti voor eenkleurige vogels en Gazzi voor de witte vogels met gekleurde aftekening.

Vanuit Italië verspreidde de Modena zich naar Duitsland, waar fokkers een wat groter en verfijnder tentoonstellingstype ontwikkelden dat vaak de Duitse Modena wordt genoemd. Van daaruit en vanuit Italië bereikte het ras ook Groot-Brittannië en Noord-Amerika, waar het al snel een vaste deelnemer op duivententoonstellingen werd.

Tegenwoordig is de Modena een van de talrijkere sierduivenrassen op tentoonstellingen en wordt het gehouden in heel Europa en Noord-Amerika. De fokkerij richt zich nog steeds op type, houding en het grote scala aan kleuren en tekeningen, niet op enige gebruiksfunctie.

Uiterlijk en rasstandaard

De Modena is een korte, stevige duif met een ronde borst, een rechte houding en een breed scala aan kleuren binnen de twee hoofdtekeningtypen.

De Modena is onmiskenbaar gedrongen. Het lichaam is kort en diep, de borst is breed en hoog gedragen, en de rug is kort. De duif staat rechtop met de staart los van de grond en de vleugels rustend op de staart in plaats van eronder gekruist. De kop is rond en de snavel is middellang en stevig. De algehele indruk is compact en rond, en dat is het centrale punt van de rasstandaard.

Verenkleed en kleuren

Het verenkleed is glad en ligt strak tegen het lichaam aan. De Modena wordt gefokt in een van de breedste kleur- en tekeningpaletten van alle duivenrassen. Schietti-vogels zijn over het hele lichaam egaal van kleur. Bij Gazzi-vogels is het grootste deel van het lichaam wit, met kleur beperkt tot de kop, de vleugelschilden en de staart. Binnen deze typen komt het ras voor in gebande, geblokte en effen tinten, onder meer in blauw, zwart, zilver, rood, geel, dun en meelkleurig. Bij de keuring wordt zowel op vorm en houding gelet als op de egaliteit en helderheid van de kleurtekening.
