뉴캐슬병은 강독성 아비안 파라믹소바이러스 1형(뉴캐슬병 바이러스)에 의해 발생하는 조류의 전염성이 매우 높은 바이러스성 질환이다. 벨로제닉 균주는 심각한 호흡기, 신경, 소화기 증상을 높은 폐사율과 함께 일으킨다. 세계동물보건기구(WOAH) 신고 대상 질병이며 사람에게 경미한 결막염을 일으킬 수 있다.
