Pasteurellosis disebabkan oleh Pasteurella multocida dan bakteri terkait yang secara normal hidup di mulut dan saluran napas banyak hewan. Kucing dan anjing umumnya membawa bakteri ini, dan luka gigitan atau cakaran sering menularkannya ke manusia, menyebabkan infeksi jaringan lunak yang berkembang cepat. Bakteri ini juga menyebabkan penyakit pernapasan pada kelinci, sapi, dan unggas, sehingga mencakup kedokteran hewan pendamping maupun ternak.
