טטנוס היא מחלה שלעיתים קרובות קטלנית, הנגרמת על ידי הרעלן של החיידק Clostridium tetani החודר דרך פצעים. סוסים וחמורים נמנים עם המינים הרגישים ביותר. הרעלן חוסם אותות עצביים מעכבים וגורם לנוקשות שרירים חמורה ולעוויתות.
