Présentation du pigeon Modène
Le Modène est un pigeon de fantaisie italien, trapu et de taille moyenne, apprécié pour la diversité de ses couleurs et son tempérament calme et docile.
Originaire du nord de l'Italie, le Modène tient son nom de la ville dont il est issu. Le corps est court et arrondi plutôt qu'élancé : cette silhouette compacte, dite trapue, caractérise l'ensemble de la race. On l'élève avant tout pour les concours et comme oiseau d'agrément, rarement pour la course ou pour la chair.
On distingue deux grandes catégories en concours. Les Schietti présentent une seule couleur unie sur tout le corps, tandis que les Gazzi associent une tête, des ailes et une queue colorées à un corps blanc. Ces deux types couvrent à eux seuls un choix de couleurs et de motifs si étendu qu'il explique en grande partie la fidélité des éleveurs à la race.
Le tempérament du Modène est doux, calme et docile. Il s'installe sans difficulté dans un pigeonnier et supporte bien la manipulation. C'est un choix fréquent pour qui débute dans l'élevage de pigeons de fantaisie. Adulte, il atteint une taille moyenne et vit de 8 à 12 ans lorsqu'il reçoit des soins attentifs.

À qui convient ce pigeon
Le Modène plaît aux éleveurs en quête d'un oiseau d'ornement au caractère paisible. Son naturel docile le rend plus facile à manier que des races plus vives, un atout pour un premier pigeon de fantaisie comme pour l'exposant qui veut un sujet capable de rester immobile sur la table de jugement. Il convient moins à qui recherche un oiseau voyageur ou performant en vol, la sélection portant sur la forme et la couleur, non sur les qualités de vol.
Histoire et origine de la race
Le Modène s'est développé pendant des siècles autour de la ville italienne de Modène, avant d'être normalisé puis exporté comme race d'exposition.
Le nom de la race renvoie à Modène, ville d'Émilie-Romagne dans le nord de l'Italie. La colombiculture y est pratiquée de longue date, et les oiseaux du pays ont été sélectionnés sur de nombreuses générations pour leur couleur et pour un corps court et arrondi. Les ancêtres italiens de la race participaient parfois à un jeu de vol collectif où l'on poursuivait puis capturait les oiseaux, une pratique qui a favorisé un type trapu et vigoureux.
Avec le temps, l'intérêt des éleveurs s'est déplacé du vol vers l'apparence. La sélection s'est concentrée sur le corps trapu, le port droit et la vaste palette de couleurs qui caractérisent encore la race de nos jours. C'est à cette période que sont apparues les deux catégories de concours : les Schietti, pour les sujets d'une seule couleur, et les Gazzi, pour le motif à corps blanc marqué de couleur.
Le Modène a ensuite gagné l'Allemagne, où des éleveurs ont mis au point une version d'exposition plus grande et plus raffinée, souvent désignée sous le nom de Modène allemand. Depuis l'Allemagne comme depuis l'Italie, la race a atteint la Grande-Bretagne puis l'Amérique du Nord, où elle est devenue une valeur sûre des concours de pigeons.
Le Modène compte aujourd'hui parmi les races de fantaisie les plus présentes en exposition, en Europe comme en Amérique du Nord. La sélection continue de porter sur le type, le port et l'étendue des couleurs et des motifs, sans lien avec un quelconque usage utilitaire.
Morphologie et standard du Modène
Le Modène est un pigeon court et trapu, à la poitrine ronde et au port bien droit, décliné dans une large palette de couleurs selon deux types de marquage.
Le Modène affiche une silhouette trapue que l'on ne confond avec aucune autre. Le corps est court et profond, la poitrine large et portée haut, le dos court. L'oiseau se tient bien droit, la queue dégagée du sol, les ailes posées sur la queue sans se croiser dessous. La tête est ronde, le bec de taille moyenne et robuste. Cet ensemble compact et arrondi constitue le point central du standard de la race.

Plumage et couleurs
Le plumage est lisse et serré contre le corps. Le Modène présente l'une des gammes de couleurs et de motifs les plus étendues chez les pigeons. Les sujets Schietti portent une seule couleur unie sur l'ensemble du corps. Chez les Gazzi, le corps est blanc sur la majeure partie de sa surface, la couleur se limitant à la tête, aux boucliers alaires et à la queue. Ces deux types se déclinent en barrés, en écaillés et en teintes unies, dans des tons de bleu, de noir, d'argenté, de rouge, de jaune, de dun et de farineux, entre autres. Le jugement en concours porte à la fois sur la forme et le port, et sur la régularité et la netteté des marques colorées.
Tempérament et caractère
Doux, calme et docile, le Modène se manipule facilement et s'adapte bien à la vie tranquille d'un pigeonnier.
Le caractère du Modène est stable et paisible. De bonne nature, il tolère sans mal une manipulation fréquente. Cette qualité compte pour beaucoup dans sa popularité en concours, où on le recommande volontiers aux nouveaux éleveurs. Les sujets s'installent en général vite dans un pigeonnier et se montrent moins nerveux que certaines races portées sur le vol.
Face à l'humain, la race reste généralement calme et ne s'affole pas lorsqu'on la saisit, à condition d'être manipulée avec douceur et régularité. Entre pigeons, elle se montre sociable et s'accommode bien d'un pigeonnier mixte, même si chaque couple défend son nichoir pendant la reproduction.
