Originaire d'Italie, le Modena est un pigeon de fantaisie trapu et docile, élevé surtout pour l'exposition et prisé pour la variété de ses couleurs.

Le Modena est un pigeon de fantaisie originaire du nord de l'Italie, où il tire son nom de la ville de Modène. Son corps trapu et arrondi, plutôt court que longiligne, le distingue au premier coup d'œil. On l'élève surtout pour l'exposition et comme oiseau de compagnie, rarement pour la course ou la viande.

La race se décline en deux grands types de concours. Les Schietti arborent une seule teinte uniforme sur tout le corps, tandis que les Gazzi ont une tête, des ailes et une queue colorées sur un corps blanc. Ces deux types couvrent un éventail de couleurs et de motifs si vaste qu'il explique en bonne partie la popularité durable de la race chez les colombiculteurs.

Le tempérament du Modena est doux, calme et docile. L'oiseau s'installe facilement dans un pigeonnier, tolère bien la manipulation et convient souvent aux gens qui débutent en colombiculture de fantaisie. À qui convient-il

Son naturel docile facilite la manipulation par rapport aux races plus nerveuses. Le Modena convient donc bien à une première expérience en colombiculture de fantaisie, de même qu'aux exposants qui cherchent un oiseau capable de rester immobile sur la table de jugement. Il convient moins à qui cherche un pigeon voyageur ou performant en vol : la sélection porte sur la forme et la couleur, pas sur les aptitudes de vol.

Histoire et origine

Le Modena s'est développé pendant des siècles dans la région de Modène, en Italie, avant d'être normalisé puis exporté comme race d'exposition dans plusieurs pays.

Le nom de la race vient de Modène, une ville d'Émilie-Romagne dans le nord de l'Italie. La colombiculture y est ancienne, et les oiseaux locaux ont été sélectionnés sur plusieurs générations pour leur couleur et leur corps court et arrondi. Les ancêtres italiens participaient parfois à un sport de vol en groupe où les oiseaux étaient chassés puis capturés, une pratique qui favorisait un type trapu et actif.

Avec le temps, les éleveurs ont délaissé la performance en vol au profit de l'apparence. La sélection s'est fixée sur la silhouette trapue, le port bien droit et le large éventail de couleurs qui définissent encore la race aujourd'hui. C'est à cette époque que se sont établies les deux catégories de concours : les Schietti pour les oiseaux d'une seule couleur et les Gazzi pour le motif à corps blanc avec marques colorées.

Le Modena a franchi les frontières de l'Italie pour atteindre l'Allemagne, où des éleveurs ont mis au point un type d'exposition un peu plus grand et plus raffiné, souvent appelé Modena allemand. De là, comme directement d'Italie, la race a gagné la Grande-Bretagne puis l'Amérique du Nord, où elle est devenue une présence courante dans les concours de pigeons.

Aujourd'hui, le Modena figure parmi les races de fantaisie les plus présentes dans les expositions, tant en Europe qu'en Amérique du Nord, y compris au Canada. L'élevage continue de miser sur le type, le port et la vaste gamme de couleurs et de motifs plutôt que sur une quelconque utilité fonctionnelle.

Apparence et standard de la race

Le Modena est un pigeon court et trapu, à la poitrine arrondie et au port bien droit, dont les deux principaux types de marquage couvrent une large palette de couleurs.

Le Modena affiche une silhouette trapue reconnaissable entre toutes. Le corps est court et profond, la poitrine large et portée haut, le dos court. L'oiseau se tient droit, la queue dégagée du sol, et les ailes reposent sur la queue plutôt que de se croiser en dessous. La tête est arrondie et le bec, de taille moyenne, reste robuste. L'allure générale, compacte et arrondie, constitue le point central du standard de la race.

Plumage et couleurs

Le plumage est lisse et serré contre le corps. Le Modena se décline dans l'un des éventails de couleurs et de motifs les plus vastes chez les pigeons. Les oiseaux Schietti portent une seule couleur unie sur tout le corps. Les oiseaux Gazzi sont blancs sur la majeure partie du corps, la couleur se limitant à la tête, aux boucliers alaires et à la queue. À l'intérieur de ces deux types, la race se présente en barrés, en écaillés et en teintes unies, dans des tons de bleu, de noir, d'argenté, de rouge, de jaune, de dun et de farineux, entre autres. Tempérament et comportement

Le Modena affiche un tempérament doux, calme et docile, facile à manier, bien adapté à une vie tranquille en pigeonnier.

Le Modena a un caractère tranquille et régulier. Il est de bonne nature et tolère bien la manipulation fréquente. Cette qualité explique en bonne partie sa popularité comme oiseau de concours, et le fait qu'on le recommande souvent aux nouveaux éleveurs. Les oiseaux s'installent en général rapidement dans un pigeonnier et se montrent moins nerveux que certaines races portées sur le vol.

Avec les humains, la race reste généralement calme et ne panique pas facilement lorsqu'on la prend, à condition que la manipulation soit douce et constante. Avec les autres pigeons, elle est sociable et vit bien en pigeonnier mixte, même si les couples défendent leur propre nichoir durant la reproduction. Le Modena n'est pas agressif envers ses gardiens et se débat rarement lorsqu'on le tient. Comme oiseau grégaire, il se porte mieux en compagnie d'autres pigeons que gardé seul.
