Le Modène est un pigeon d'exhibition italien, trapu et de taille moyenne, apprécié pour la diversité de ses couleurs et son tempérament calme et sociable.

Le Modène est une race de pigeon de fantaisie originaire du nord de l'Italie, qui doit son nom à la ville de Modène. C'est un oiseau trapu et court, au corps rond plutôt qu'allongé. En Belgique comme ailleurs, on l'élève surtout pour les concours et comme pigeon d'agrément, pas pour la course ou la viande.

Deux grands types d'exposition sont reconnus. Les Schietti sont unicolores, dans une teinte uniforme, tandis que les Gazzi portent une tête, des ailes et une queue colorées sur un corps blanc. Dans les deux cas, la race se décline dans une très large palette de couleurs et de motifs, ce qui explique que la race compte de nombreux adeptes parmi les éleveurs de pigeons.

Sur le plan du caractère, le Modène est doux, calme et docile. Il s'installe facilement dans un colombier, supporte bien la manipulation, et convient souvent aux amateurs qui débutent dans l'élevage de pigeons de fantaisie. À l'âge adulte, il atteint une taille moyenne et vit généralement de 8 à 12 ans si les soins sont corrects.

À qui convient-il

Le Modène convient aux éleveurs qui recherchent un pigeon d'ornement au tempérament tranquille. Sa docilité le rend plus facile à manipuler que des races plus vives, ce qui en fait un bon choix pour un premier pigeon de fantaisie ou pour un exposant qui veut un oiseau capable de rester immobile sur la table de jugement. Il convient moins à qui cherche un pigeon voyageur ou performant en vol, la sélection portant sur la forme et la couleur, pas sur les qualités de vol.

Histoire et origine

Le Modène s'est développé autour de la ville italienne de Modène, où il a été sélectionné pendant des siècles avant d'être standardisé et exporté comme race d'exposition.

La race tire son nom de Modène, dans la région d'Émilie-Romagne, au nord de l'Italie. L'élevage du pigeon y est ancien, et les oiseaux locaux ont été sélectionnés sur de nombreuses générations pour leur couleur et leur corps court et arrondi. Les ancêtres italiens étaient parfois utilisés dans un jeu de vol en groupe où les oiseaux étaient chassés puis capturés, une pratique qui favorisait un type trapu et vif.

Avec le temps, les éleveurs ont délaissé la performance en vol au profit de l'apparence. La sélection s'est fixée sur la silhouette trapue, le port dressé et le large éventail de couleurs qui définissent encore la race aujourd'hui. Les deux catégories d'exposition, les Schietti unicolores et les Gazzi à corps blanc avec marquage coloré, se sont établies durant cette période.

Le Modène a franchi les frontières de l'Italie pour gagner l'Allemagne, où les éleveurs ont mis au point un type d'exposition un peu plus grand et plus raffiné, souvent appelé Modène allemand. De là, comme depuis l'Italie, la race a atteint la Grande-Bretagne puis l'Amérique du Nord, où elle est devenue une présence courante dans les concours colombophiles.

En Belgique, où la colombophilie occupe une place importante depuis longtemps, le Modène s'est taillé une place parmi les amateurs d'exposition, aux côtés des races de pigeons voyageurs bien implantées dans le pays. Aujourd'hui, le Modène compte parmi les races de fantaisie les plus présentées en concours, aussi bien en Europe qu'en Amérique du Nord. La sélection continue de viser le type, le maintien et la richesse des couleurs plutôt qu'une utilité pratique quelconque.

Apparence et standard de la race

Le Modène est un pigeon court et trapu, à la poitrine ronde, au port dressé, et qui se décline dans une large gamme de couleurs selon ses deux types de marquage.

Le Modène est reconnaissable à sa silhouette trapue. Le corps est court et profond, la poitrine large et portée haute, le dos court. L'oiseau se tient dressé, la queue dégagée du sol, les ailes reposant sur la queue plutôt que croisées en dessous. La tête est ronde et le bec moyen et robuste. La ligne générale, compacte et arrondie, constitue le point central du standard de la race.

Plumage et couleurs

Le plumage est lisse et bien plaqué contre le corps. Le Modène présente l'une des palettes de couleurs et de motifs les plus étendues parmi les races de pigeons. Les sujets Schietti sont d'une seule couleur unie sur tout le corps. Les sujets Gazzi sont blancs sur la majeure partie du corps, la couleur restant limitée à la tête, aux écussons alaires et à la queue. Au sein de ces deux types, la race se rencontre en barré, en écaillé et en unicolore, dans des teintes bleues, noires, argentées, rouges, jaunes, isabelle et blond. Le jugement en concours tient compte à la fois de la forme et du maintien, et de la netteté des marquages colorés.

Tempérament et comportement

Le Modène est doux, calme et docile, ce qui le rend facile à manipuler et bien adapté à un colombier stable.

Le Modène a un caractère tranquille et régulier. Il est d'un naturel bon enfant et supporte bien une manipulation fréquente, ce qui explique en partie sa popularité comme oiseau de concours et sa réputation de bon choix pour les débutants. Les sujets s'installent en général vite dans un colombier et sont moins nerveux ou vifs que certaines races de vol.

Avec les humains, la race reste généralement calme et ne panique pas facilement quand on la prend en main, pour autant que la manipulation soit douce et régulière. Avec les autres pigeons, elle est sociable et vit bien en colombier mixte, même si les couples défendent leur propre nichoir en période de reproduction. Le Modène n'est pas agressif envers son éleveur et se débat rarement quand on le tient. Comme tout oiseau grégaire, il se porte mieux en compagnie que seul.
